Agriculture Brussels Livestock report Dominion Meats buys heifer for SI 19 Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending April 4 were 3,223 head of cattle, 1,121 lambs and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold $2 higher on a strong market. Cows sold steady. On Thursday the veal sold at prices $2 to $3 higher. The lambs sold on a strong active trade. On Friday the calves sold on a steady market while the yearlings sold at prices $1 to $2 higher. There were 619 steers on offer selling from $104 to $110 with sales to $127.50. Emerson L. Martin, Linwood, consigned one blonde steer weighing 1,345 lbs. which sold to Holly Park Meat Packers for $127.50. His overall offering of fifteen steers averaged 1,332 lbs. selling for an average price of $119.22. Thirteen steers consigned by Andrew Martin, Chesley averaged 1,379 lbs. selling for an average of $109.90 with his top gold steer weighing 1,355 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $120.50. K C. McAlpine Farms, Ailsa Craig, consigned two red wf steers averaging 1,420 lbs. which sold to Dominion Meats for $117. Their overall offering of fifteen steers averaged 1,419 lbs. selling for an average price of $113.13. Sixty steers consigned by Al Renning, Exeter, averaged 1,353 lbs. which sold for an average of $111.70 with his top seven limousin steers 12th bull sale nets $191,000 The 12th annual Pick of the Crop Bull Sale at Carson’s Salesplex in Listowel had the biggest crowd ever in attendance with over 400 producers taking part in the day’s festivities. Bull buyers arrived early so that they had an opportunity of viewing the bulls. Pick of the Crop catalogues were mailed out prior to and were on hand at the sale allowing buyers to review the bull and heifer data and genetic evaluation information prior to making their selections. The day’s events commenced with a bull parade and a short presentation on genetic evaluations by Dr. Steve Miller from the University of Guelph and BIO’s Beef Production Consultant Jack McCoubrey providing his expertise on what to look for when selecting a bull. The heifer sale came next with Allan Aitchison of A-J Acres in New Federations to hold NMA meetings The Huron and Perth County Federations of Agriculture will be hosting two information meetings to bring producers up to date on the status of Bill 81, the provincial nutrient management legislation. The meetings will be held on Wednesday, April 9 at the Seaforth Community Centre, and Thursday, April 10 at the Milverton Community Centre, both meetings will start at 8 p.m. Many producers have questions about how the proposed regulations will affect their farm, what the compliance dates are, and what category they will fit into. Twenty-two steers consigned by John Gingrich, Mount Forest, averaged 1,323 lbs. selling for an average of $108.28 with his top limousin steer weighing 1,240 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $118. Schmidt Brook Farms, Woodstock, consigned one limousin steer weighing 1,355 lbs. which sold to Ryding Regency for $116. Their Liskeard buying the high-selling open heifer, a Limousin Cross (Red Angus x Simmental) from Barry Robbins of Courtright. Aitchison was honoured with a jacket prior to the sale for purchasing the Cattlemen’s Choice bull at the 2002 sale. The volume buyer of open heifers was Ranch Lougami of Asbestos, Quebec purchasing 17 black heifers. The bull sale averaged $2,730 on 45 bulls. The high selling bulls of the event were: a two-year old Black Angus bull consigned by Mike Earley of Hillcrest Farms in Kerwood selling to Bob and Pat Dick of Douglas for $5,000 voted as the 2003 Merial Canada- sponsored Cattlemen’s Choice Award; Red Angus bull owned by Larry Smith of Birchlawn Farms sold to George Taylor of Purple Hill Stock Farms in Thorndale for $5,000. Coalition will be one of the speakers. FitzGibbon has been very close to the development of the regulations and will bring the most up-to-date information available.
