Gandon, Duffs guest speaker FROM WALTON Water safety topic at WLS The Walton Little School senior pre-school Acorn class, Great Oaks from Little Acorns Grow had a busy week. On Wednesday, Esther Buck of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority talked to them about river safety. She had them put their hands in icy cold water and told them to stay away from rivers and streams to stay safe. The rest of the week, they were kept busy creating goodies for their bake sale held for their families at the end of the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday school days. They are raising money to buy some new books for their Acorn room. They had a good time and lots of fun. The junior pre-school stars class were also busy. Ms Buck also spoke to them about river safety. They learned it is not a safe place to be by themselves. They are talking about the letter T. They are also learning about space, making flying saucers, and writing in their journals about the different planets and the sun and moon. They are really enjoying the space theme. The toddler butterflies have had a busy month learning about colours and shapes. Some of their favourite activities included playing in coloured rice, making their own shape books, mixing and creating colours and playing many colour and shape-matching games. Two books they have enjoyed are What Makes a Rainbow by Betty Ann Schwartz and Brown Rabbitt’s Shape Book by Alan Baker. 12 tables in play at euchre The Walton Hall board held its euchre on Thursday evening with 12 tables at play. The lucky first-place winners were the father/son team of Jim and Ron Smith. Coming in second were partners Hazel Reid and Delores Howatt. Third-place saw a tie between Lloyd and Lillian Appleby and Helen MacKenzie and Jean Keyes. The lone hand winners were Vera Ahrens and Les Caldwell. Those attending Duff’s United Church Sunday were greeted by Judy Emmrich. The theme was God’s Call. Guest speaker, Rev. Phil Gandon, was introduced by Karen Hoegy. He was bom in England and ordained in 1956 in the Church of England. He and his wife Jean immigrated to Canada in 1958 and began their life in Windsor. They moved to Huron County in 1963 to Exeter Anglican Church. He was elected deputy reeve and sat on Huron County council during the 1960s. In 1969 he became an executive director of Goodwill Industries in London. This group works to provide support and employment opportunities for disabled and special-needs people. He spent 20 years serving in this capacity. He spent the next three years as an executive director of the RP Foundation which is a group that helps people who are losing their sight. He retired to Goderich in 1993 and has preached in all the Anglican PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 McGavin’s started the week in Walton with a Hardi sprayer clinic. There were around 50 farmers on hand to learn about special applications, foam marker demonstrations, maintenance and OPP investigate theft in McKillop On March 27 just before 11 a.m. Huron OPP were called to a residence on Bridge Road in McKillop Twp. part of Huron East over a break-in. He called the children forward and asked them how they contact someone. Answers included e-mail, phone and letter. “But how does God contact us?” he asked. Rev. Gandon explained that through peoples’ good deeds, scripture messages and individual beliefs people pass on God’s message. He had the children turn and shout to the congregation, “Smile, God loves you.” Scripture reader was Jennifer McClure. Rev. Gandon’s message was on Christian calling and that God calls people in many different ways. The offering was taken by Ian Wilbee and Don Baan. The UCW meeting is Wednesday, April 2 at 8 p.m. It is Toonies for Friendship. They will be planning the shower for Amy Shortreed for next Friday evening. The ushers for the month of April include Ross Bennett, Ken trouble shooting and rate controller demonstrations. It was a well-run and informational day for all. Down the road at Cook’s on Wednesday was a grower information meeting. There were around 30 on hand to listen to the three guest speakers talking on agribiotics, Bayer crop science and Oligosol. They enjoyed lunch following the meeting. Graeme and Helen Craig travelled to Toronto to attend the insurance convention. Graeme attended the meetings while Helen enjoyed the ladies’ program. Monday there was a meeting at Duff’s of over 40 members of the UCW Presbyterial from our area. The meeting began at 9:30 a.m. and business was discussed until the lunch break. Walton’s UCW served a soup and sandwich lunch. The members of the worship and program committee met on Monday evening to discuss the upcoming Condolences to Harold McCallum and family on the passing of his brother George McCallum. Many Walton-area people were on hand to celebrate the 30th wedding anniversary of Neil and Joan Beuermann at the Brussels Legion on Saturday evening. Local family members in attendance included sisters Betty McCallum and Ron, Sharon McClure and Bill and brother Glenn Beuermann and Marilyn. Sisters Elaine and Valerie and families were also in attend­ ance. Neil and Marie McGavin travelled to Waterford to visit with friends they have made through the Plowmen’s Association. They are part owners of Chalmbers Pancake House and Neil and Marie were to meet them there. While waiting, they were seated at Corporation of the Municipality of Huron East NOTICE OF BUDGET MEETING Pursuant to Section 291, Municipal Act, 2001 special Sundays in the church year. Palm Sunday is April 13 and congregants will celebrate communion. The Good Friday service will be observed in Walton at 11 a.m. and Easter Sunday service will also be at 11 a.m. The members of the confirmation class and Rev. Joan spent the weekend at the Five Oaks Retreat Centre near Paris. Attending were Adam McClure, Andrew McDonald, Justin Beisinger, Elise Ringgenberg, and Laura Black as well as five young people from the Bluevale congregation. They spent their timein thoughtful reflection, and started writing their creeds - their personal faith statements in what they believe. They watched the movies Chocolat and Jesus Christ Superstar in their explorations of Jesus and the different aspects of his life. They also explored the meaning of stewardship and outreach. During break basketball and volleyball were enjoyed. They worked hard and had fun reports Rev. Joan. a table with a couple who during conversation said they used to live in Huron County and that the McGavins looked familiar. How amazing that out of a crowd of over 40, they would be sitting with Herman and Joanne Plas, who used to live on the former 16th of Grey, Jim McDonald farm. They left the Walton area 23 years ago and settled in Waterford. The foursome had a great visit catching up on Walton people they knew. Celebrating birthdays last week were Bob Axtmann, Murray Crich, Ken Dalton, Dalton Hamilton, Andrea Gingerich, Janet Bachert, Robin McCall, Becky Laverty.
