Sports Midgets lose heartbreaker in OMHA final The Blyth Midget Bulldogs lost to Sunderland on Sunday afternoon 2-1 in overtime in the deciding game of the OMHA Midget E finals. Blyth received the finalist trophy and medallions. Blyth travelled to Sunderland on Saturday for game four. Dog Joel Riley scored two first-period goals and Micah Loder tallied in the second frame to lead 3-0 after two periods. Kirk Stewart and Loder added third-period goals. Travis Shelton had a solid game in the Blyth cage to register a 5-0 shutout. Assists went to K. Stewart, two; Cole Stewart, two; Darren Austin and Tyler Kemighan. Game five in Blyth proved to be a tight-checking game. Sunder­ land scored a first-period goal to take the lead, but Neil Salverda tied the game in the second period on passes from K. Stewart and J. Riley. The third period remained scoreless to send the game to overtime. Sunderland banged in a rebound four minutes into overtime to clinch the game and the OMHA title'. Marks, Andy Toll, Nate Witherspoon, Ryan McClinchey, Mike Bean, Cody Anderson, Brett Bean, Kemighan, Loder, Chris Bernard, Austin, Riley, Salverda and K. Stewart. Team officials were Doug McClinchey, Carmen Bernard, John Stewart, Robb Finch and Barney Stewart. Dogs capture WOAA E title On Sunday, March 23 the Blyth PeeWee Bulldogs captured the Dave Neilson trophy as the WOAA E champions. After going 6-0 in round-robin play, Blyth met Mitchell in the semi­ finals. They won the first game at home 10-3, and the second game 6- 2 in Mitchell to take the best of three After a scoreless first, the hosts scored early in the second. Then McDowell tied it. In the third McDowell scored to give Blyth the lead but just 33 seconds later Saugeen Shores tied it. With just over two minutes on the clock McDowell scored his hattrick and Blyth held on for a 3-2 win to take the series two games to none. Assists went to Thomas Lecomte, Bean and Sturzenegger. The squad had a great run going 10-0. Enroute to the championship they outplayed every team they faced. The boys really worked hard. (Vicky Bremner photo)_____ Blyth Mites top Lucknow The Blyth Mites travelled to Lucknow for their final game of the season. They pulled off an 8-6 win. -Scoring for Blyth were Ashley Higgins with two, Ryan Plunkett with two, Conner Rodgers with two and Curtis Raynard. The fans were so interested they missed who scored one goal. Assisting with these goals were Hunter Dale, Wyatt and Dalton Carey, Brendan Hallahan and Dallas Coultes. The kids played well and were so keen they continued to score goals after the buzzer. They ended out the season with a pizza party and fun was had by all. Warwick rink wins draw Winners of the February- March curling draw at Brussels are: first, 43 points, Brian Warwick. Pauline Patterson, Gary Pipe, Tara Pipe; second, 42 points, Orval Bauer, Jean Bewley, Jeff Cardiff, Sandra Pepper; third, 38.5 points, Mike Alexander, Ken Jones, Rose Kellington, Janet Koehler; fourth, 38 points, Stewart Steiss, Karen Uhler, Connie Alcock, Douwa Top. series. On March 17 Blyth started a best of three series with Saugeen Shores. In game one at home, Saugeen Shores was leading into the third. They scored three goals less than four minutes apart in the second, while Blyth had just one, scored by John McDowell. The assist went to Derek Youngblut. Blyth drew closer when Derek Youngblut scored, assisted by Tony Bean. Curtis Robertson tied it late in the third forcing the game into a 10- minute overtime period. McDowell, assisted by Roman Sturzenegger and Bean scored first. Saugeen Shores scored 12 seconds later to tie it up again. Then Curtis Robertson scored, assisted by Mat Stevenson. Blyth held on for the win. Sean Cook played great between the pipes. The second game was played Sunday, March 23 in Southampton. Tykes show improvement The Tykes played in the year-end tournament in Blyth over the weekend. They faced Hensall on Friday night. It was an exciting and defensive game. Andrew Patton saw tons of rubber in net. Dawson Peachey made his hockey debut. On Saturday at noon, the team took on Zurich. Solid goaltending was demonstrated by Shawn Dale. After a breakaway stopped by the buzzer, Brock McLean scored with 48 seconds remaining. All players showed a noticeable improvement in their skills since the start of the season. Coach was Mike Vader, assistant was Steve Dolmage and trainer was Pam McLean.
