Letter to the editor Writer shares info from peace meeting THE EDITOR, I am writing to share information from a local ecumenical meeting this past Sunday, at the home of Carol and Brent Bowyer outside Wingham. During the introductions participants shared feelings of sorrow, anger, powerlessness, frustration, disappointment and hope. Representatives attended from Clinton, Listowel, Brussels, Wingham and Lucknow. Lena Seegers of Brussels facilitated a brainstorming exercise of various responses to the war. It was decided to organize a Peace Vigil and Iraqi Relief evening on Saturday, April 12in Goderich. We will meet at 5 p.m. at the Gazebo on the Square and walk to MP Paul Steckle’s office. There will be times of bell ringing, singing and silence. Following the vigil we will gather at North Street United Church for a potluck meal, then assemble relief kits for Iraqi families displaced by the war. We will be inviting churches in Goderich to ring their church bells for 10 minutes starting at 5 p.m. to show their support for peace. We invite interested readers to Catholic Education Week from April 27- May 2 bring bells, candles and something for a potluck and to join with us in vigiling for peace. We wanted to invite others to participate in their own “personal vigil”. We thought that having a central “registry” where people could register their intention to have a vigil would help us connect and know of the support for peace in our community. Carol Bowyer at 357 - 1883 agreed to serve as the contact person for registering individuals intending to have a personal vigil. Carol will be able to help people with ideas for how to hold a “personal vigil”. Carol also has information on the relief kits and we would invite your readers to call her to find out how to make one or contribute materials for them. The Mennonite Central Committee is co-ordinating this effort and asks for uniformity in the kits so that there is a sense of equality between families in the receiving community. They have a very specific list of what they ask for in the kits: Relief Kit- (Pack in cardboard box) 4 bath-sized bar soaps 1 plastic bottle of shampoo(450- 830ml) in a plastic bag 10 c. powdered laundry detergent ( concentrated preferred)( package in’ double 4 L/l gal. bag.) 1 squeeze tube toothpaste (minimum size 130 ml) 4 adult sized tooth brushes ( leave in packaging) 4 NEW regular sized bath towels (medium weight, NOT PLAIN WHITE, colourful) 1 hairbrush 1 wide toothed comb I fingernail clipper 1 box band-aids ( minimum 40, assorted) I package sanitary napkins (18-24 thin maxi or ultra thin) We felt that the best response to healing the damage of war is to join in the global witness for peace and to bring relief to the victims. We would also encourage people to write the prime minister and Steckle, to urge them to continue opposing this illegal and destabilizing war of preemptive attack. Yours sincerely, Tony McQuail, THE EDITOR, During the week of April 27 - May 2 the Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board will be celebrating Catholic Education Week 2003. The theme for the .week is “Catholic Education - Rooted in Christ”. This theme emphasizes that the education offered in Catholic schools is based on Gospel values. Catholic education, which teaches a view of life centred on the person of Jesus and the good news of the gospel, makes a distinctive contribution not only to the life of our students, but also to the community we share with all citizens of Ontario and Canada. Catholic Education Week is marked by special activities at all grade levels, including prayer celebrations and service activities. I would like to invite you to visit our school(s) during this special week and to participate in any of our activities as we celebrate Catholic Education Week 2003. Yours sincerely, Larry Langan, Director of Education. Murder victim's papers found Officers from the Huron Ontario Provincial Police detachment, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, are continuing their investigation into the death of Felix Barufe, 24, who was found dead in his Spencetown Road home in Howick Twp. on Feb. 6. An autopsy determined the man, who lived alone, died as a result of blunt force trauma sometime between Saturday, Feb. 1 and Monday, Feb. 3. Documents belonging to the murdered man were discovered March 24 by a passerby along County Rd. 87 near the Fordwich Line, in Howick. Members of the Ontario Provincial Police Western region Emergency Response Team have searched the roadsides looking for further evidence, however, investigators believe that as tne snow melts, other items may be uncovered. Anyone who finds anything is asked to contact the OPP immediately. Investigators would also like to talk to two men whose vehicle became stuck in the ditch on Creamery Road, just south of the victim’s residence, on the evening of Jan. 28. One man is described as white, a large build with broad shoulders, and short hair. He was possibly wearing a lumber jacket with a white t-shirt underneath. The second man is described as black. He had short hair or possibly a shaved head and was wearing black clothing. The vehicle is described as a small to mid-sized dark-coloured sports car. It may have had a rear spoiler on the trunk. Huron OPP would like to speak with these two men or anyone who may have provided assistance. Investigators have already determined that a square, five-gallon pail containing approximately $3,000 worth of loonies and toonies was stolen from the house. Police believe some stereo equipment was also taken. The victim’s wallet was found about six kilometres from the murder scene on County Rd. 87 just north of Fordwich. Investigators continue to trace the activities of the deceased prior to his death. Felix Barufe drove two vehicles in the community - a 1999 blue Chev S10 pickup truck with Ontario licence plate 868 5KE and a white 2001 Grand Am with a large racing spoiler on the rear with Ontario licence plate AMXA 881. Investigators are still interested in speaking with anyone who knew Felix Barufe. Anyone with information is asked to call the Huron OPP Detachment at 519-524- 8314 or the Communications Centre at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at l-800-222-8477(TIPS). Next COP meeting April 16 Continued from page 1 It is not easily traced after ingestion, making it an ideal weapon in rape. Gillan explained that this drug can be crushed and slipped into pop, bottled water or alcoholic beverages undetected. Signs which might tip parents off to drug use Shropshall said are: money going fast or disappearing from around the house, a change in habits such as not coming home at expected times or a newly- developed, very mellow, laid-back state. Finally, Shropshall explained that the child’s dirty laundry will have a “skunk-like stink” to it because of smoking marijuana. Shropshall said that in his experience, the best age group to speak to about drugs was Grades 6- 8. “It seems a bit easier to get the message across to these kids before they get to high school.” Massicott strongly suggests to parents “Talk, talk, talk. If your kids say drugs are no worse than alcohol, you say ‘Alright then, do the research and show me’.” The April 16 COP meeting, being held in Brussels at 7:30 p.m., will focus on protecting home, farm and business from theft. Engravers will be available that evening.
