Huron East discusses municipal fire areas By David Blaney Special to The Citizen For the past several weeks the three fire chiefs in Huron East have been meeting with Clerk Jack McLachlan and representatives from council to examine fire services in the municipality. There are currently volunteer fire departments in Brussels, Grey and Seaforth each with its own administration, equip ment and fire chief. The meetings are intended to see if current fire areas are appropriate and if reorganization might reduce the workload on individuals and departments. All the departments currently have responsibilities for fire areas extending outside the municipality as well as their respon sibilities for Huron East. Each chief has responsibility for fire prevention programs, fire inspections and administration as well as the actual business of fire fighting within their own areas. The meetings have so far concen trated on administration and fire areas but equipment will be dis cussed in the future according to McLachlan. He said they were not discussing any form of integration “at this time.” At the March 17 meeting of coun cil McLachlan presented a recom mendation from the ad hoc commit tee that council appoint an overall fire chief for all three departments. He emphasized that according to the committee, “The idea of a full-time chief is not to have him run each department.” The chiefs of the three depart ments are described as fully support ing the idea. The proposed reorgani zation would allow them to concen trate on department operations by greatly reducing their administrative duties. Deputy-Mayor Bernie MacLellan felt that one role for the new chief would be to co-ordinate the paper work. “The biggest complaint from the chiefs now, is the amount of paperwork,” he said. Later McLachlan suggested that items such as fire inspections and a comprehensive and cohesive fire prevention program might also fit into the new role if it was approved by council. No final decision was made at the meeting about advertising for the new position. Several councillors wanted a more exact idea of the time required. It was felt that while the committee was suggesting the job would take approximately three days a week, a more definite determination of the extent of the duties would be useful. Councillor Joe Seili, a member of the committee, suggested having a full job description and pay rate established prior to any final deci sion by council. This idea was adopted and the committee was asked to return to the next council meeting with these items in hand. If council approves the proposal the advertising for the job would ini tially be restricted to current employees of Huron East. Multiple sclerosis never hits just one person.
