From the Minister’s Study
Commandment, Melville theme
On Sunday morning the flowers
placed at the front of the church
were from the family of John Wayne
Lowe in his memory.
Rhonda and Doug McArter and
family greeted the congregation as
they arrived and Rev. Cathrine
Campbell led the call to worship,
followed by the congregational
greeting.
The children’s hymn Give Me Oil
in My Lamp preceded Rev.
Campbell’s talk about using the 10
commandments as a recipe for
building a good life. Then as the
children went downstairs for Sunday
School, the scripture reading of
Exodus 20: 1-17, 1 Corinthians 1:
18-25; John 2: 13-22 was read with
assistance by Brian Armstrong.
Rev. Campbell’s sermon, These
Foolish Things, described how Jesus
threw the money changers and
merchants out of the temple.
The offering was collected by
Maurice Douman, Jeff Cardiff, Bill
King and Doug McArter.
Tuesday evening Bible Study will
be in the church parlour. The
Thursday afternoon Bible Study will
be held at Helen Elliott’s home.
On March 27, the junior (7 p.m.)
and senior choirs (8 p.m.) are
meeting to prepare special music for
Easter Sunday. All are welcome to
join the choir for this special day.
Of course all wanted to know
exactly how many pies were made
and sold in our piemaking bee, and
Rev, Campbell was pleased to
inform that by the best tally
available, 145 plus apple pies, 26
15 at Melville Guild meeting
rhubarb pies and countless pie shells
were produced and sold out of the
church kitchen last Saturday to fill
the orders.
The work was done by an
assembly line that included a very
good turnout of expert pie bakers.
Next Sunday after the service, a
lunch of chili, scones and cake will
be provided by the session so that
people may be on hand to discuss
tower matters. All members of the
congregation are encouraged to be
there to participate.
Donations from the lunch will go
to Presbyterian Sharing.

Quakers plan peace meeting
THE EDITOR,
I am writing on behalf of the
Lucknow Quaker Worship Group.
One of our members, Stewart
Vriesinga, is in Baghdad, Iraq with
the Christian Peacemaker Team.
When Stewart left for Iraq he told
us he felt called to be with the people
of Iraq in their time of danger, not
because he could be a human shield
or prevent a war by his presence but
because he felt the need to be with
them to let them know there were
Christians who opposed war and
were prepared to share their
suffering.
He closed an e-mail telling of his
decision to go to Iraq with the
following statement “Global peace
and security will only come about as
the result of healthy relationships
-healthy relationships with all those
we share a home with, all those we
share a community with, all those
we share a country with, all those we
share a continent with, all those we
share a planet with, and a healthy
relationship with creation itself. The
healing of all our unhealthy,
dysfunctional relationships requires
affirming the good in each other,
non-violently and lovingly opposing
and challenging the bad in each
other, and truly and openly listening
and responding to the challenges and
affirmations of our own behavior. If
we can achieve that, we will also
have a healthy relationship with
ourselves and with our Creator”
We are searching for ways that we
can support Stewart’s work. A
meeting is set for 2 pm Sunday,
March 30, at Brent and Carol
Bowyers, outside Wingham to
brainstorm things we can do in our
community to say No to war and
hate and Yes to peace and love.
Representatives from other churches
will be joining us and we would like
to invite any of your readers.
Anyone unable to attend but who
has ideascan call 357-1883.
Following our worship this past
Sunday we discussed things we
could do now. We will be putting
candles in our windows every night
of the war and spending some time
each day praying for peace. To join
this witness register at website
www.moveon.org/windowlight.
The moveon organization has
been co-ordinating a global citizen’s
peace effort. They have a “Citizen’s
Declaration” which people around
the world are signing at
http://www.moveon.org/declaration/
which may be of interest to your
readers. Calling the toll free line (1-
866-880-4378) to let the Prime
Minister, Jean Chretien, know of
their support for his decision to stay
out of the war and encouragement to
hold fast is also a positive action.
At times, facing the enormity and
destruction of war and hate we can
feel powerless. Yet the Berlin Wall
was taken down by the people not
the leaders. Join with us to seek
ways we can support peace and start
pulling down the wall of militarism
that is dividing the world today.
Yours in Peace,
Tony McQuail.
