Weather Network promises
slow, steady start to spring
The transition to spring will be
slow but steady for most of the
country still suffering from the
remains of a cold and snowy winter.
Eastern Canada will not keep pace
with the west’s quick start to spring,
says The Weather Network in its
just-released Spring Forecast
available on-line at
www.theweathemetwork.com
“Cool air spinning off the Hudson
jay vortex will be carried south and
east by the jet stream, circulating
brisk air into northern Ontario and
Quebec, and causing slightly cooler
temperatures in those areas this
spring,” says Ron Bianchi, head of
meteorology at The Weather
Network.
In the Great Lakes region, with a
thick snow pack and so much ice to
melt, warm temperatures at the
surface will be consumed through
evaporation and melting of snow
and ice, making the transition into
spring more gradual than in the past
few years.
The Great Lake water
temperatures will also be slow to
warm, so long as the ice remains.
The cold water increases the
frequency of lake breezes and this
phenomenon is known to enhance
thunderstorm activity.
“With cold water in the lakes, and
the adjacent land heating up faster,
we will see more lake breezes
travelling over land. The lake
breezes may interact with warm,
humid air moving northward from
the southern U.S., combined with
cold air aloft, making the
atmosphere unstable. All of these
factors would create a more active
season for thunderstorms in
southern Ontario, particularly in the
corridor stretching from Windsor to
Barrie.”
In southern Ontario, Quebec and
for most of the Atlantic provinces
though, near normal temperatures
and levels of precipitation can be
expected once the snow eventually
melts. The exception in Atlantic
Canada will be northern
Newfoundland and Labrador,
including St. John’s, which will
have cooler than normal
temperatures this spring and slightly
higher levels of precipitation.

spring forecast by city is available
on-line at

Finesse
With tenacity and a solid effort, the Blyth Midget Bulldogs
forced a fourth game in their OMHA finals against
Sunderland at home on Sunday. The team went into the
contest down two games to none in this best of five series.
