Sympathy is also extended to a
Church, Rev. Stephen Huntley and
his wife and family on the death of
his mother.
On a happier note some Blyth and
area residents travelled to Waterloo
on Friday, March 21 to help former
residents Don and Lenore Young
celebrate their 50th wedding
anniversary. Those attending were
Terry and Brenda Rutledge, Auburn,
Ed and Joan Watson, Don and Linda
Stewart, Don and Marilyn Craig,
Fred and Deb Hakkers and boys, all
of Blyth. It was nice to see all the
Youngs as Barry was home from
Calgary and Lorie was home from
Sunday visitors at the home of
Vera Hesselwood were her daughter
Bonnie from London and her two
sisters.
The next euchre is March 24 at
7:30 p.m. in the Legion.
Greeting at Blyth United Church
Sunday, March 23 were Brenda
Brooks and Lloyd Sippel. Ushering
was Earl Fyfe. Guest musician was
Margaret Kai.
The choir sang Holy Lord.
The children’s hymn was Jesus
Loves Me. The children’s story was
the story of how the hymn came
about. About 150 years ago two
sisters lived near a military school.
They were both writers and teachers.
They invited the children to come to
Sunday School and they wrote the
poem Jesus Loves Me for the
smaller children. A few years later it
was given to a man who put it to
music and then a few years later they
added two more verses.
Dramatized lectionary reading,
from Exodus 24: 12-18 was read by
Rev. Eugen Bannerman, Brandilyn,
Amanda and Wyatt Bearss, Chelsea
and Amelia Carter-Brown. The
responsive reading was the 10
commandments. The gospel reading
was from Mark 12: 28-34.
Rev. Bannerman’s message to the
adults was Which Commandment.
Which commandment is most
important for Christians today?
He told of a story of an educated
lawyer asking Jesus which is the
greatest of all commandments and
Jesus answered “The first is, Hear,
Israel, the Lord God is one Lord, and
you are to Love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and all your soul,
and your mind, and with all your
energy.
The second is this: “Love your
neighbour as yourself.”
Today Rev. Bannerman said,
people no longer live by
commandments. The spirit of Jesus
has set them free from the legalistic
bonds and requirements. It doesn’t
mean they disagree with the moral
code of the Hebrew scriptures; what
it means is that they need new,
contemporary models of
achievement and spiritual health.
They need life lessons they
understand, which come out of their
own experience. They need goals in
their lives and then should ask God
to help them achieve them.
He gave an example of Diane
Stuemer, one of Ottawa’s local
celebrities, who died on March 15
from a creeping skin cancer.
Seven years ago she had a brush
with skin cancer. She decided to
focus on her three major goals in
life: to spend time with her famdy, to
travel the world and to write a book.
By sailing around the world with
her family for four years and writing
about their experiences she felt she
accomplished all three goals at once.
Here are a few Diane Steumer’s
Life Lessons. Live your life with
passion. Dare to dream. Focus on
your dream and keep it in front of
you until you can visualize it as real.
Begin immediately, even if you are
not ready. Never, never give up.
When all else fails, you can always
laugh. To the world, you may be
only one person, but to one person,
you can be the world.
Everyone was invited downstairs
for lunch to help the Sunday School
celebrate their foster child, Swabu’s
birthday.
Special dates to remember are
April" 13 Palm Sunday and
Communion. April 18 is a special
service for Good Friday, a
Candlelight of Passion Play by
James B. Douglas, actor and April 5
is Women’s Day Out.

Blyth Public School Grade 8 student John Bokhout shows
off the form that took him to a third-place finish at the
regional Knights of Columbus free throw competition in
London. After winning at the school earlier this year,
Bokhout sunk 12 out of 15 shots in the district contest at
Clinton to capture first there. This put him in contention for
the regionals where he sunk 17 of his 25 shots. (Bonnie Gropp)
