PEOPLE AROUND ETHEL Mm f INK By Andrea Hruska I Call 887-2605 • Generous work One of the Ethel United Church Sunday School’s outreach mission projects is through the blessing tree. Recently they asked the congregation for donations of eyeglasses which were given to the Lions Club to help others. With the blessing tree are, from left: Lindsay Stewart, Lauren Stewart, Emily Baker, Isaac Baker, Alyssa Diehl, Sara Baker and Shalin Diehl. (Photo submitted) More blessings During February Ethel United Church’s Sunday school asked for donations of teddy bears or money towards teddy bears for the blessing tree. On Sunday, March 9 the bears were dedicated and commissioned to provide help to those facing trauma. The bears were received by Deputy Fire Chief David Diehl, back right and Captain Don Cochrane, back left of the Grey department. Front from left are: Beth Earl, Lauren Stewart, Kendra Earl, Alyssa Diehl, Lindsay Stewart and Dianne Diehl. (Photo submitted) Over dinner with friends Sunday night, I was explaining how my son and I were on our way home from our homeschooling group last Friday and had the great opportunity to pull over on the road and watch a raccoon. This particular critter proved to be very entertaining, wandering around with a somewhat slow saunter and eventually, according to Ben, disappearing into a log. When we explained this to our dinner companion, he thought that perhaps the raccoon was a bit “dazed” for not being fully awake from its long winter slumber. If this weekend was any indication, Ethelonians are certainly wide awake from any winter “snooziness” and ready to bring on spring. Sunday’s beautiful weather brought a great deal of action; children were playing street hockey and riding bikes through large bodies of water created by melting snow. Adults were doing outside work, hanging laundry, digging out barbecues and trying to find ways to avoid having ice laden eavestroughs fall off houses. Even the Grey Twp. fire trucks got a good scrubbing. I also realized that I need to make a very important call to Ministry of Transportation to explain that they need to add a new and very important component to the driver examination. This addition would involve having the driver attempt to manoeuvre through and around a group of teenagers standing or playing hackey sack in the middle of a well-travelled street, half on one side of the yellow line and half on the other. And I thought the parallel parking was tough. Grey Twp. firefighters had their monthly meeting last week. Calvin Semple, fire chief, explained that the firefighters are working on some hazardous materials coursework. This month is also the annual recertification for first aid and CPR. This Wednesday, March 19 is the monthly COP meeting to be held at the Brussels’ OPP office at 7:30 p.m. Along with the regular format of the meetings, the topicyfor the evening is drug awareness. This is a good opportunity to see different kinds of street drugs and paraphernalia and ask questions. On a final note, I spent a great deal of time cruising around the History channel for interesting and entertaining St. Patrick’s day facts. I took a break to get a mug of coffee and heard on my CBC-tuned radio that George W. Bush has proclaimed March 17 the “day of truth” and the last effort of diplomacy for Saddam Hussein and his country. As we talk amongst friends or share a hearty laugh over a good Irish pint take time to think about what is about to happen. Perhaps we think it doesn’t affect us here in Ethel but I believe it should. Until next week.
