The Citizen, 2003-03-19, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2003. FROM BRUSSELS Edgars greet Greeting the Melville Presbyterian Church’s congregation on Sunday morning were Viola and Allan Edgar. The flowers on the communion table were placed in memory of Bill Shortreed by his family. Rev. Cathrine Campbell pointed out how clean and sparkling everything looked since the housecleaning blitz. She thanked Harvey and Betty Shaw for their regular maintenance, care of the church building and snow shovelling. The choir sang God’s Wonderful People accompanied by Julie Mitchell. Organist Mary Douma accompanied the singing of the children’s hymn which preceded Rev. Cathrine’s story about St. Patrick driving out the snakes in Ireland and the significance of the shamrock. Scripture reading of Genesis 17: 1- 8, Romans 4: 13-25; and Mark 8: 31- 38 was assisted by reader Maurice Douma. The sermon entitled Don’t Forget was of God’s revelation to Abraham of the founding of the nation and also of Jesus revealing to his disciples his future and the promise of resurrection. The collection was taken by Maurice Douma, Amy Douma, and Dave McCutcheon. Sunday’s tobogganing event attracted a good crowd and thanks are due to the Sunday School leaders for the sweet treats they provided. Next Saturday, March 22, is the date for the pie-making bee. Helpers are asked to bring pie-making tools with them. Pies may be ordered from Julie Mitchell or Jeff Cardiff. On Thursday afternoon Bible Study will be held at the home of Helen Elliott. Sarah Exel is working as information co-ordinator with Dave McCutcheon in the production of a monthly church calendar. Those with events to include may phone 887- 9202. Rebekahs meet The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge, Brussels took place on Tuesday, March 11 with Noble Grand Sister Gertie Kellington presiding. Sister Helen Coates District Deputy President of Huron-Perth District #23 paid her official spring visit at this meeting. She was accompanied by seven members from Exeter. The district meeting is to be held on March 12 in Exeter. Sisters Elva Brown and Edna Pearson will attend. Plans for the casserole supper and euchre party on March 17 were finalized. A committee was formed to plan the 70th anniversary celebration on May 21. At the Branch People play darts A new taste Little Grace vanNes is introduced to a new taste as her aunt Terry offers some nibbles of cupcake. The pair were among the several enjoying the special March break skate and activities planned by the Brussels church community. Following time on the ice at the arena, everyone went to St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church for treats and games. (Bonnie Gropp photo) Hum, hum, hum...“What a difference a day makes...”. You know the song. I kept twirling about in my mind as the week unfolded. The change in weather, in activity and overall mood was so evident in that 24-hour span. The words of the song are so true, shown once again as spring made a dramatic appearance on Saturday. The puddles needed to be splashed, the lawn chairs needed to be found, the roller blades needed an outing and the strollers, scooters and walkers were out in full force. Ah spring! The skates aren’t hung up yet and we’re ready for ball and soccer registration - check the ads for time and details. The last part of this school year is in session and the hopes and dreams of the kids need your support and attention as they cope with the details of learning. Their work is just as hard and nerve-wracking as yours so give them your full support as they make decisions that will be part of their life memories. Sounds pretty heavy but think about some of your school events and memories and how they have affected your life now. The spring events are starting to surface so get the word out about your date so others can’t avoid it and attend. Be sure to make your way to the United church on Thursday. You’ll get a good lunch and be supporting the work of the Women of the Church. Mildred Jacklin got the surprise of a lifetime when Don and Joyce picked her and Lawrence up at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 16 to take them out for a dinner reservation they said they had made. They first took them to the basement of the Brussels United Church, however, supposedly to show Mildred an especially nice quilt that some of the local women had quilted. When Mildred entered, 24 members of her family hollered “surprise” and a surprise it sure was. There wasn’t any quilt in sight. Sons, Gordon and Debbie, Don and Joyce and Wayne and daughter Marlene and Brian were all present as well as all seven grandchildren and their spouses except Kathy Rutledge who stayed at home with their sick little boy who had been bitten by the flu bug. Twelve great grandchildren ranging in ages from 12 down to five months were also present. Two beautiful bouquets of variegated long-stem roses and baby’s breath as well as coloured balloons added colour to the head table. A plentiful and delicious potluck supper was enjoyed by all. “This kind deed put forth by all of the families refreshed my memory that it’s nice to have step-children,” said Mildred. Bye now, Betty G.W. By Jo-Ann McDonald The Brussels Legion Branch Thursday night dart results saw first place going to Ron Schmitt and Ken Miller. Coming in second were Bill Kamerman and John Harrison. The high shot of the night was 116 by Ron Schmitt. The low shots or skunks as they are called were thrown by Julie Harrison, Bob Cochrane and Sandra Josling. The Friday night supper of beef stew was delicious and enjoyed by a smaller crowd. This week is ham and scalloped potatoes. On Saturday the eight advancing euchre players travelled to Owen sound to play in District euchre. Having a good day but not advancing any further were Jim Alton, Dale Sauve, Willis Knight, Lloyd Glanville, Mike Dauphin, Andy Overholt, Eric Ross and Norm Dobson. There were 13 tables of euchre players vying for top prize. The winning couple of Raymond and Lois Haggitt took first prize with 81 points. In second place with 75 points was Isabelle Gray and Hilda Holmes. Third prize was shared between Dennis and Aileen Leddy and Stuart and Lois Chamney with 71 points each. The low pair of the day was Marie Park and Lois Cunningham. The lucky lone hand winners were Viola Kirkby and Charlie McDonald. On Sunday Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald attended the Zone convention held at Seaforth Branch. This was an election year. The new Zone Commander is Comrade Shirley Chalmers and the new Deputy Zone Commander is Comrade Crystal Taylor of the Blyth Branch 420. Around 80 attended the Sunday night singles dance. Music was by Country Motion. There are only three more dances before the auditorium floor is going to be refinished. Hopefully that will improve the dancibility of the floor.
