Hackwells greet at Duffs United Church The smiling faces of Howard and Audrey Hackwell greeted those attending Duff’s United Church in Walton. The choir sang the anthem Dust and Ashes Touch Our Face. When the children joined Rev. Joan at the front of the church she showed them a card with a signature on it. Her message was on how PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 A week ago there was an engagement party held for Amy Shortreed and Murray Whyte at the Kinbum Hall. There were many family and friends in attendance to play euchre, crokinole and other games. The wedding is planned for May. Amy is the daughter of Ken and Judy Shortreed. Returning home from a motor tr p to Florida were David and Joan Perrie. They travelled to Naples, near Bonita Springs, to stay at a friend’s trailer. There were orange and grapefruit trees in abundance for Dave to pick daily fruit. They travelled the area and Joan waded in the waters of the Atlantic. They spent a week in the Orlando FROM ETHEL Euchre winners The Ethel euchre was held on Monday, March 3 with 11 tables in play. Winners were: share-the-wealth, Marion Harrison, Edna McLellan; high, Jean Schneider, Margaret Peebles; lone hands, Eileen Mann, Verna Crawford, Allan Edgar, Bill Meyer, Charlie Harrison; low, Margaret Beirnes, Scott McLean, Walter Harrifield. There were numerous lucky tally winners. Another trip we all wish we cold take to get away from the cold is to Hawaii. Jeff and Shannon McGavin had the opportunity through New Holland to enjoy a week’s getaway. They flew to the island of Maui and landed at the Calahari airport. They toured Oaha and Pearl Harbour. They toured the USS Missouri where the declaration of peace was Signed with Japan. They enjoyed snorkelling around the coral reef and had the unexpected sighting of a giant sea turtle. It came close enough to touch, but because it is an endangered species, warnings were given not to touch them. They were also lucky enough to be there during the hump back whale mating season. There were plenty of whales and baby whales to be seen. The weather was great with a little rain in the morning, then beautiful sunny days. The Brussels Bullettes Midget girls hockey team participated in a tournament in Burlington. They are considered a B level team playing against A level teams. They played against Guelph Friday and lost 2-1. Saturday started with a loss to Mississauga 2-1, then a win against Burlington 1-0. They had to play Mississauga again in the semi-final and lost 1-0. Obviously the girls played very well and we congratulate local players, Sarah McDonald and Rachel Elliott. There’s a new face on the former 16th of Grey. Gary Sutcliffe has moved in to the former Workman farm. He’s new to the area moving here from England. He’s involved with TS Fabrication in Walton. Welcome to the Walton area. The weather was a little stormy on Saturday night but that didn’t stop a good crowd from attending the buck and doe for LeeAnn McDonald and Jason Konarski. It was held at Seaforth and District Community Centre. A new home on the former eighth of Morris has its tenants. Spending the weekend with Don and Monique Baan, Ryan, Adam, and Emma were Oma and Opa Vanostaayen from Stayner. The boys were very excited Sunday morning to show them off at Sunday School. Feeling under the weather and having to spend a little time in hospital this past week was Edith Wey. We hope she is feeling better soon. Not so lucky and with a longer road to recovery is young Brandon McGavin. He suffered an unfortunate accident at school and has broken his leg quite badly. He is in Seaforth Hospital and expects to go to London Hospital for surgery by the time you read this. We wish him a speedy recovery. Ken MacDonald is still a patient in Listowel Hospital and Isabel Riehl has been moved to Maplewood Manor in Seaforth to continue her recovery. The birthday babies last week include Sandra (Watson) Butler, Josh Beisinger, Brian Wilbee, Dean Hackwell, Andy Pethick, Nicole Stevenson, Neil McDonald, Mark McIlwain, Bob Blake, Maryanna Ryan, Ruth Axtmann, Fred McClure, Carali McCall and Alex Melady. Acorns start new project The Walton Little School Senior preschool Acorn class started a new project last week about food. They have been reading recipes and made two special snacks a purple cow drink and zebra stripes pudding. They are drawing pictures of their favourite foods for their journals and colouring title pages for their cookbooks that they will take home at the end of the month. FROM WALTON Spring, UCW theme Members of the Walton UCW met on Wednesday evening in the basement decorated for St. Patrick’s Day. There were 13 ladies present to enjoy the theme of spring. Committee members were Audrey Hackwell, Dianne van Vliet, Judy Emmrich and Vai Pethick. The opening selects were read by Judy and the scriptures by Audrey. Dianne led in prayer. A poem Tapestry of Spring followed. The topic was discussed in three sections including signs of spring. A contest, called the spring flower scramble, led by Judy, was enjoyed by all. There was a reminder to hand in grocery tapes as soon as possible. A light lunch of sandwiches was enjoyed at the end of the evening. food all day. The junior pre-schools have picked a name for their room, The Stars. It came from “if you shoot for the moon, you will land among the stars”. They are talking about the colours of the rainbow, shapes and numbers. They did shaving cream art and made their own shape books. The children are really enjoying the huge snow hill in the playground.
