Euchre is at the Legion Monday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. Happy 100th birthday is extended to Winnie Vincent of Seaforth Manor Nursing Home. Many friends from the area helped her celebrate on March 8 with an open house in her honour. Amy McCrea of Blyth, Doug and B.J. of St. Thomas, Brad and Maureen Montgomery of Blyth, Sean, Tabatha, Bradley, Bryce, Keagen Keiffer of Beamsville and. Colleen and Dale Lamont of London attended the 100th birthday party for Winnie Vincent and later visited with Amy and Ralph McCrea for the weekend. Sympathy is extended to Helen Stonehouse on the death of her niece Sonia (Stonehouse) Ellis of Whiteville after a courageous battle with cancer. Sympathy is also extended to her many cousins in the area. Greeting at Blyth United Church Sunday, March 9 were Lloyd and Donna Sippel. Ushering was Earl Fyfe. Guest musician was Margaret Kai. The choir sang Like a Mighty Council briefs Ralph Campbell, drainage superintendent, reviewed the engineer’s report for the Charter/Caldwell drain for North Huron council at its March 3 meeting. The approximate cost for the work is $41,500. The municipality will pick up the road assessment portion River Flowing. the children’s hymn was Come Let us Sing of A Wonderful Love. The children’s story was on Christopher Columbus and how he came to America and discovered the new world and that his mission was to spread the word of God to the new world natives. The dramatized lectionary reading was from Genesis 9: 8-17, read by Rev. Eugen Bannerman and Ollie Craig. The responsive reading was the 25th Psalm. The gospel reading was from Mark 1: 9-15. Rev. A meeting was held with the property owners on Feb.20. Campbell said they were in agreement with the report. *** Brian Luinstra of Maitland Valley Conservation Authority explained that a groundwater monitoring network is being put in throughout the watershed. He requested the use of the East Wawanosh landfill site well for this purpose. Council gave approval. *** Authorization was given to Moore-Tech Construction to complete the required repairs at the North Huron Wescast Communtiy Complex as quoted. However, council and Dan Cousins, director of recreation and facilities believe the work should be covered under warranty and will attempt to recover the costs from the original contractor. Clerk-Administrator John Stewart said that though the warranty had run out, the contractor was notified of the problem prior to that. The township’s solicitor suggested that they proceed with the work, before this is resolved so that the situtation doesn’t worsen. *** The design and drawings for the renovations to the Wingham police station have been completed and tenders will be invited for a closing date of April 4. *** Council endorsed a resolution from the Municipality of Trent Hills asking the province to develop a new funding formula which would eliminate the high cost associated with mandated drinking water system upgrades. A second resolution was endorsed from the City of Thorold, requesting both governments implement the recommendations outlines in the Romanow Report in order to improve health care for all Canadians in a timely fashion. A reserve is being established for the purchase of an aerial truck for the Wingham fire department in 2004. (Janice Becker photo) The general meeting of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 420 was held on March 4 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting commenced with the installation of a new member Linda Marshall by Comrades Thelma Johnston and Crystal Taylor. A motion was passed to donate $575 to the Blyth Girl Guides for the purchase of camping equipment. The Branch bylaws were passed and plans were made for the upcoming elimination draw. Upcoming events in the work of the Legion include: assisting the auxiliary with their community breakfast March 16 at the Blyth Memorial Hall; hosting the Zone sports, track and field meeting March 19.
