Coulteses greet at Melville service
Sunday, members- of Melville
Presbyterian Church were greeted at
the door by Jack and Liz Coultes.
Flowers had been placed at the front
of the church in memory of Bill
Shortreed by his family.
With Rev. Cathrine Campbell in
charge, the call to worship and
congregational greeting were
followed by children’s hymn, This is
My Father’s World, accompanied by
organist Mary Douma. The
children’s story was of Noah and the
flood, and the promise given with
FROM BRUSSELS
News
from the
Branch
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch began with the Ladies
Auxiliary meeting on Monday
evening. They discussed their
normal business and their upcoming
events. They will be providing
lunch for the Huron County darts on
Saturday. They also have other
catering events on the schedule.
The Cadets met on Tuesday
evening and are busy practising for
their upcoming inspection.
The Thursday night darts had a
good bunch attend the evening. The
first-place team was Norm Dobson
and John Harrison. The second place
team was Sandra Josling, Adam
Smith and Dale Sauve. The high
shots were by John Harrison with
133 points and Kathy Cochrane with
131 points.
The Friday night supper of shake
and bake chicken legs with salads
was enjoyed by almost 40. This
week in recognition of St. Patrick’s
Day it will be Irish beef stew. There
will be Irish tunes as well.
Saturday was a dart day at the
Branch as the Huron County dart
players were in attendance. The
auxiliary ladies were on hand to
provide lunch.
Sunday was the cooking bee. A
little conversation made lots of
noise. The old saying that too many
cooks will spoil the oroth will not
hold true this time. The aromas of
lasagna, meatballs, cabbage rolls,
and Hungarian goulash filled the
kitchen. Look forward to these
delicious creations in the coming
weeks.
President Rick McDonald
attended the Zone council meeting
in Lucknow on Wednesday evening.
The upcoming Zone Convention in
Seaforth was discussed.
A lovely thank you note was
received from Cliff Huffman of
Walton for the use of a wheelchair
from the Legion. There are two
chairs available for loan for anyone
in need. Contact the Legion.
Pop tabs are still being collected
and we will soon have enough to
send off.

Clarence McCutcheon was on grill duty last Tuesday night
when people from the Brussels community filled the
basement of St. John’s Anglican Church for the annual
pancake supper. (Janice Becker photo)

After the children went down to
Sunday School, Justine King
assisted with the scripture reading
taken from Genesis 9: 8-17; 1 Peter
3: 13-22; and Mark 1:9-15.
Rev. Campbell’s sermon was I
Promise ..., a reflection on symbols
and promises, the rainbow as a
symbol of God’s caring and love,
and other religious symbols such as
water for baptism, the dove of peace,
the cross for salvation.
Collection was taken by Bill
Aitchisoh, Leanne Armstrong,
Maurice Douma and Doug McArter.
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was
quite successful in spite of stormy
weather. Good meals, good
company, new friendships, and all of
this as a donation to the cause.
All willing and able volunteers are
invited to turn out for spring church
cleaning -on March 14 and 15, a
bring-your-own-mop event. There is
also a pie-baking bee in the planning
stage for March 22. This will mean
that there will be homemade pies and
pie shells for sale.
David McCutcheon has been
named our calendar co-ordinator so
notify him at 887-9202 for
scheduling events.
The children of the church have
been invited by St. Ambrose Youth
to share in free skating at the BM&G
arena on Wednesday, then back to St.
Ambrose for fun and games. Also
the Sunday School is planning to go
tobogganing next Sunday at 3 p.m.
Well, did you get your fill of
pancakes last week and finish up the
last of the 2002 maple syrup? That’s
just another good sign that spring is
really on the way.
The city boat, motorcycle, car and
sports shows are over for the year
and the garden shows are in the
works. Visits to the shows of your
choice are all intended to give your
soul a lift. Plans, hopes, dreams and
good intentions are all part of the
passing of the seasons. Oh to dream.
The grins of the kids as they made
their plans for this week were a joy
to watch. Bowling, swimming,
skating, sleepovers and shopping
were on the list of March break
things that need to be done. Have
fun, I know you will. If you’re
reading this on Wednesday morning
remind your young friends of the
opportunity to go skating at the
arena and then back to the Catholic
Church for goodies and games.
Thanks to the Brussels congregation
for this outreach gesture.
You’ll be needing to get your
green garments out for next Monday
as you celebrate the Irish in you. It
seems we all have a little.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
S.
Thank You
We would like to thank all the people
who came to our Grand Opening
or sent flowers or gifts. We were very
touched by all the best wishes and words of
encouragement. A special thanks to our
family and friends for all their help and
support. It made our opening successful
and fun. We are glad to be living in a
community that welcomes new people with
such enthusiasm as we have been shown.
Once again, we thank you very much.
