Local couple celebrates golden occasion
The newlyweds set sail April 19,
1953 for Canada, a trip that took
seven days on the boat. After
arriving they lived in the Brantford
area where Jan worked for five years
It was a honeymoon trip to a new
home for the former Jantina Hagen
and Jan (John) Benjamins who were
married 50 years ago Feb. 27 in The
Netherlands.
for farmers, then spent six years in a
factory. Jantina was a housewife.
During these years they had six
children, Cathy, Grace, Evelyn,
Jake, John and Kenneth.
They moved to the Blyth area in
1964, operating a pig and poultry
farm for 24 years on Cone. 12 of
Hullett Twp. Jan also worked from
1966 to 1974 at Dominion Roads in
Goderich.
By this time another son Jerry had
been added to the family.
The couple semi-retired in 1988
when their son John took over the
family farm. His parents moved then
to the Seaforth area where they had a
small laying hen farm. In 1997 they
moved to Blyth.
The Benjamins have been

John enjoys his volunteer time,
driving for the Wingham and
District Adult Day Care. Tinie’s
hobby is gardening and she takes
pleasure from flowers both inside
and out. The couple love to spend
time with their 32 grandchildren and
are always looking forward to
camping in the summer and
Christmas gatherings.

A golden anniversary celebration
was held on Saturday at the Clinton
Christian Reformed Church. Unable
to attend were four of the
Benjamins’ grandchildren. A couple
are teaching in Japan, their oldest
granddaughter is in mission in the
Phillipines and a grandson is
studying in British Columbia.
The Benjamins express their
thanks to God for 50 wonderful
years together.
