Grey Central Eeha Students participate in speaking competition On the evening of Feb. 26, nine students from Grey Central represented the school at the public speaking contest hosted by the Brussels Legion. Grade 5 student Derek Bachert placed first in the junior division and Grade 1 student Chelsey Terpstra placed first in primary storytelling and advanced onto the next level of competition in Clinton. Honourable mention also goes to Grade 7 student Tanya Bechard, who placed second in the senior division. In addition to the speakers already acknowledged, the school would like to congratulate all of the speakers who competed on Wednesday night and thank them for representing Grey Central so capably. Thanks to Alysha Lewis, Amber Daugherty, Cole McLean, Kalem Hammermuller, Janessa Smith and Ryan Baan. Ms Van Bolhuis’s morning class had a test on volume, capacity and mass. They made cupcakes for Mitchell’s 11th birthday. In language, they are working on fairy tales and the setting of a story. The afternoon class finished a unit on measurement in math and started a problem-solving unit. They measured treasures and did a language article review. They are having a test on problem solving on Tuesday, Mdi^h 4. Mrs. Sr uJi’s kindergarten class is learning the M sound. They enjoyed reading a book entitled Mom and making paper plate monkeys. They learned the number 10. This week, they started to make a word wall in their classroom. Mrs. Bowler’s kindergarten classes are learning the letter L. They did a lot of L activities. This week they celebrated 100 days of school. They made crowns with the word 100 on them. They decorated their crowns by putting 100 stickers on them in groups of 10s. They made Cheerio necklaces and marked each group of 10 with a coloured Fruitloop. They made a chain of 100 paper chain links and gave it to Mrs. McDowell. They also made 100 footprints and put them down the primary hall. Mrs. Goodall’s Grade 1 class also celebrated 100 Day. They made 100th day necklaces and crowns. They also counted out a delicious and nutritious snack. They had fun making a 100th day storybook called Mr. Wolf’s Chicken Stew. During calendar time, they keep track of the number of days they have come to school this year in several ways that reinforce counting skills, the value of money and place value concepts. On 100 Day, they were excited about putting a loonie in the counting box and making a bundle of 100 popsicle sticks on the place value chart. Miss Hill’s Grade 1/2 class made crowns and necklaces to celebrate the 100th day of school. In math, they are doing graphing. In Grade 2, they did a Canada quilt square. The Grade Is are studying community helpers. Mr. Park’s Grade 2/3s went to Howick Central to meet their penpals. The pals exchanged presents, toured Howick Central, went skating and participated in many fun activities. They got glow- in-the-dark necklaces and Mr. Park’s class gave them a homemade journal book with nature collages on the covers. Mrs. Taylor’s Grade 3/4 class made clown faces in French and they learned division in math. In gym, they were skipping. This week in science the 3/4s learned about sounds. The Grade 4s were taking notes on Ontario. This week the Grade 3s learned about magnets and in math they learned about money. Miss Aarssen’s Grade 4s are preparing a social studies test on Canada. In math, they are doing division, multiplications and fact families. In science, they are doing sound. In art they are doing Canada Day posters. The Grade 5s are learning geometry. In social studies they are studying the government of Canada. In science, they are learning about matter. In gym, they are playing basketball. Mr. Walker’s Grade 5/6s are making story webs in language. In math, the Grade 5s are learning decimals and the Grade 6s are rounding numbers. In social studies, the Grade 4s are doing government and ancient Rome and the Grade 6s are learning about the Algonquins and the Wendat. The Grade 6s continue to study electricity in science. In phys ed, the class is playing floor hockey and crab soccer. Ms Henry’s Grade 7 class has just had a quiz on algebra and have started fractions. They are having a history quiz on Unit 4. In geography, they had a test on climographs. In gym, they are doing floor hockey. Miss Henry made up four teams and they play a different team each day. Next week will be the championship. They will count up the wins and the winner overall will receive a prize. Mr. Payne’s Grade 8 class is learning about cells in science. In math, they are learning algebra.
