PEOPLE AROUND Andrea Hruska Call 887-2605 Grey Twp. firefighters responded to two ealls this past week, a snowmobile aeeident on Saturday evening and a precautionary eall regarding a propane tank on Sunday. When 1 ealled Calvin Semple, fire chief, to ask what ealls the men had responded to last week, he explained about the Saturday night eall and expressed gratitude and appreeiation to all the people involved. Emergency response units aside, Semple mentioned snowmobilers, residents and someone on a four- wheeler whose efforts were of great importance that night. I am sure you know who you arc and thank you all for pulling together. Ethel kids got together Saturday afternoon for a game of hockey. Wayne Gretzky watch out! There were some pretty fancy moves going on. Glen and Sue Brubacher bought hot chocolate for all the kids and after the game everyone went to Brubacher’s restaurant to warm up. What a great afternoon. Kyle Bateman, Jesse McKinnon and I switched off as goalies but apparently, most of the goals were scored when I was in net. I would like to thank Mervin Brubacher and his dad for coming to Hood on Saturday night, Jessica,. Stephanie and Michael Zaba for flooding with Andrew Versteed this week and the Boyer kids for doing lots of shovelling. One of my favourite radio programs is CBC’s Today in History so I thought I would share some similar tidbits I found on a website. I must say that I did not verify the dates but they arc interesting. For Monday, Jan. 27 it listed Mozart's birthday in 1756, Thomas Edison patents the electric incandescent lamp in 1880 and Michael Jackson’s hair catching fire (remember that Pepsi commercial?) in 1984. Here are a few more dates for the week: On Jan. 31, 1928 the first roll of Scotch Tape was sold and on Feb. I, 1884 the Oxford dictionary was published. Don't forget that Groundhog Day is coming. Candlemas is also on Feb. 2 and some say that Groundhog Day actually originated from Candlemas. There is an old Scottish Couplet that says “If Candlemas is bright and clear, there'll be two winters in the year”. Food for thought! (Janice Becker photo) PEOPLE AROUND CRANBROOK By Peter Hagedoorn Call 887-6935 The meeting of the Ladies’ Aid from Cranbrook Church took place Jan. 21 at the home of Lois Schneider. Frieda Crawford opened the meeting with a poem called Blessings. The hymn Standing at the Portal of the Opening Year was read in unison. A story called The Rich Family was read. This was the tale of a very poor family, who never realized they were penniless until the pastor singled them out by giving them some money in front of their congregation. At Thy Feet, Oh God and Father was read. Both hymns (this one and the preceding one) hailed the coming of the New Year. Prayer was offered and the meeting was turned over to the president. Minutes were read and and collection was taken. A review was given for the Ladies’ Aid, the WMS and the church cleaning. Donna Knight reported that the WMS allocation for the year 2002 had been met. The Mizpah benediction was repeated and lunch was served. The darts for fun held Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Cranbrook Hall resulted in the following scores? high, Gail Spieran at 114, Dave Bowles at 125. The next darts for fun is to be held Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. The next euchre part at the Cranbrook Hall will be held on Friday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. Happy birthday to Lexi Smith who celebrated her sixth birthday last Saturday, Jan. 25. and to John Bentley who will celebrate his birthday on Jan. 31. Happy Birthday wishes also to John Vanass, who used to live in Cranbrook and who at this time is not getting any younger and would rather forget about birthdays altogether. CAREER OPPS.
