At the Branch
Parents support Cadets with fundraising
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It's been a stormy week around
here and of course that reflects in
activities at the Brussels Legion
Branch
rhe Cadets met on Tuesday
evening as usual. They are working
hard on their drills and other courses.
New for the Corp this year is their
parent support group. They have
formed to aid in fundraising as the
Department of National Defence has
cut back its support.
The Thursday night dart league had
only nine players. The first-place
team was John Harrison and Bruce
Clarke. The second-place team was
Norm Dobson and Bill Kammerman.
The high was thrown by Lawrence
Machan with 140 points.
This Friday night supper will be
spareribs, a change from the plan of
roast pork. This past week’s supper of
shake and bake chicken legs was
enjoyed by a crowd of over 40 diners.
On Saturday, 16 comrades
travelled to Howick Community
Centre by bus to participate in Zone
euchre, hosted by the Howick Branch
307. There were eight members, or
two teams, which
will advance to District level in
Owen Sound including Andy
Overholt, Mike Dauphin, Norm
Dobson. Eric Ross, Dale Sauve. Jim
Alton. Lloyd Glanville and Willis
Knight.
The other eight Comrades who
enjoyed their day were Gary Pipe,
Gary Emmerson, Rick McDonald,
Oh what beautiful sunshine. It was
like a surprise gift, warm wonderful
shining light for a couple of days
this past week. January is such a
surprising month, never sure what to
offer - blizzards, squalls, cold or
just pretty little snowflakes. But the
end is in sight and by week’s end the
concerns for January weather will be
past and then we’ll begin worrying
about whether a little brown rodent
sees her shadow.
The flu bug is still making the
rounds so take care of yourself with
proper diet, lots of rest and the most
important thing you can do for
yourself and others - wash your
hands! All research repeats this
simple idea - wash your hands at all
the appropriate times and several
times in between. When you use
lots of soap, friction and water
you are helping keep the little nasty
bugs where they belong - down the
drain.
So get your favourite 15 to 20-
second-dilty ready, lather up and
rinse under running water. Be sure
to include your fingertips in your
performance. You Are My Sunshine
works just as well as the Alphabet or

who advanced
On Saturday evening the Branch
and members of the Brussels Pipe
Band hosted the Robbie Burns
Dance. The weather wasn't very nice
and only a small crowd ventured out
to hear the music of the Ken Scott
orchestra. The combined members
of the Brussels and Listowel Pipe
Bands performed twice during the .
evening with a wonderful and
moving performance of Amazing
Grace. We are thankful for the
dedicated members of our pipe band
and their efforts to keep the
wonderful pipe music resounding
within our Branch walls.
There are only two days left to pay
dues for 2003 and stay a member in
good standing. Contact Membership
Chairman John Harrison for
reinstatement if you are unable to get
in and pay your dues in time.
Thanks to all our volunteer helpers
for the month of January. The help
for February includes Comrades Ken
and Linda Bird, Ruth Machan, John
Kerkhof, Dale Sauve, John Huether,
Gord Finch, Andy and Marge Adams,
Jim Alton and Dianne Machan.
There is going to be a cooking bee
by the Friday night cooks and
donations of various items would be
appreciated. We are looking for
ground beef, spaghetti sauce, lasagna
noodles, cheese blocks, onions,
ketchup, tomato sauce, canned
favourite. Just make it long enough
to move the little nasties off your
hands and down the drain.
Phyllis Beacom is in the hospital.
Our best wishes are going her way.
We ventured to Waterloo on
Saturday to see The Bible
(Unabridged) and it was even better
than anticipated. What a treat and a
nice surprise - a rib-tickling, belly
laugh performance. The high energy
level of the three male actors in very
simple costumes was a real joy as
they depended on facial expression
and words to get the humour across.
Taking the Bible literally we
found out that there were computers
in that time and that motorcycles
were also part of the landscape.
Those two tidbits, as well as
many others made for a very
entertaining way
now and then.
Yes, there was
Garden of Eden
‘triumph’ that was heard all over the
land.
The show is playing until mid
February at Waterloo Stage Theatre.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
