Man pleads to several charges in Goderich court A'Blyth man was given a nine- month conditional sentence after pleading guilty Jan. 15 in Goderich to charges involving criminal harassment, assault and mischief. According to evidence presented in the case, the history behind the charges dates back as far as 1959 when George Oster assaulted his now-estranged wife on their wedding night. The victim said Oster was a heavy drinker throughout the marriage, and that his violent behaviour toward her escalated to the point she sustained a broken nose and ribs. Oster also held a knife to her throat. For several years after she left him in 1981 following a severe beating, Oster continued to stalk his ex-wife, breaking into her apartment, calling her and damaging her car. In 1989, the victim moved to Clinton with her new partner and the stalking seemed to stop. It resumed shortly after the victim’s partner passed away in the spring of 2000. As condition of his sentencing Oster must remain on his own residential property at all times with certain exceptions. This includes travelling to and from, or attending his place of employment for up to four hours twice weekly, shopping two half days a week, banking or attending pre-authorized medical and legal appointments, the funerals of friends or family. Oster must take counselling and cannot communicate directly or indirectly with his ex-wife or their three daughters. He may attend the Blyth post office, where his ex-wife is employed, twice weekly between 6 and 8 p.m. or on Saturday afternoon between 1 and 3 p.m. He cannot be within 100 metres of his ex-wife’s Clinton residence, nor of two of his daughters who reside in the province, except for shopping. An 18-month probation period will follow and a 10-year weapon prohibition was also imposed. Coming Soon to The Citizen FROM BELGRAVE J.
