Some of you may have noticed the peculiar sight of Jim Struthers and Bob Alexander plowing and scraping Mrs. Dobson's vacant lot beside the mailboxes on Saturday morning. Over-enthusiastic men with snow blowers? Not exactly! Mrs. Dobson has very graciously allowed our community to set up a FROM AUBURN Lions hear from exchange student Auburn and District Lions Club held a ladies’ night on Jan. 15 at the Auburn Community Hall, catered by the Blyth Minor Hockey Association. A new member, Bev Cooke, was inducted. The ceremony was skating rink on her property and the men with tractors were creating a base. In my opinion. Mrs. Dobson's generous decision was a great leap of faith in us as parents and a wonderful show of dedication to our children. Several times in conversation with Mrs. Dobson about having a rink on her property, she expressed that she would really enjoy seeing the children skating there. As a parent, I am grateful for the opportunity to have a safe location for a rink, in the centre of town, where our children can skate with each other but still be near homes and the Brubacher’s restaurant should they need assistance. As our children struggle for independence and we struggle to Diabetes West Huron’s Women’s Institute meeting was held on Jan. 16. Teresa Roetcisoender and Maureen Bean, public relations officer and health were in charge of the meeting. Guest speaker was Regina Campbell who spoke on diabetes. She discussed the different types of diabetes, the risk factors and the symptoms of diabetes. She also impressed on the listeners the seriousness of the disease, for it is a chronic disease that has no cure and is the leading cause of death by disease. She cautioned that if anyone has a family history of diabetes they should be periodically checked for diabetes. performed by Region Chair Ben Miller and Zone Chair Bill Manley. PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN By Margaret Fraser 1 *Call 526-1112 Marg’s Beef: “Why is Mother Nature dumping so much snow on Auburn?” I know the farmers need the moisture on the fields and the snowmobilers are happy that snow has arrived, but enough is enough. Drive carefully and enjoy the rest of the winter. Happy birthday wishes go to Ralph Lubbers with his birthday on Jan. 22. Walkerburn Club is doing a quilt at Deanna Snell’s house. The quilters are Ethel, Betty, Ila, Jackie and Verna. The quilt will be donated about helmets, sticks, mouth guards etc and participate in maintaining the rink. There is some great fun to be had. I stopped in to Brubacher’s of Ethel Saturday after flooding and, once my face thawed, struck up a conversation about skating and hot chocolate. Mr. and Mrs. Brubacher expressed their thanks and appreciation to the community for giving them such a great running start with their restaurant. A local homeschooling organization will be hosting a Mother and Daughter Victorian affair at the restaurant on Tuesday evening. And have you tried the buns with the maple frosting? it’s well worth the amount of skating required to to the Canadian Cancer Society. The Knox United Church ladies have started the quilting season. They have a quilt in and the quilters are Lois, Tina, Laura Mae, Marg, Elaine, Edith, Iola, Maxine, Verna and Ruth. The quilting is done in the church basement. There was a discussion on suggestions for beautification of Auburn for the upcoming year. Greg and Nancy Park are welcomed back to the great white north from their vacation in Florida. Ted Nelson’s message was based on work off one of those delicious treats! My husband Bob and our oldest son Ben went to check out the snow drags in Listowel on Sunday. Ben was absolutely thrilled to know that there was a racer from Ethel announced over the loudspeaker. “What was the name?" I asked. “Oh Mom! I forget!” he said with great frustration. “Was it...Tony Ward?” I asked with a smile on my face. “Yes!” he shouted. “That’s who they said - Tony Ward - from Ethel!” Tony, in the mind of my testosterone-filled six-year-old son, you are the man! Have a great week everyone! Luke 7: 36-50, and 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7. Congratulations go out to Tom and Mildred Lawlor on the birth of their granddaughter.
