Total receipts for Brussels Livestock
for the week ending Jan. 17 were
2.318 head of cattle, 305 lambs and
goats. On Tuesday the fed steers and
heifers sold on a market with prices $2
higher. The cows traded on a steady
market. On Thursday both the veal and
lamb sold on a steady market. On
Friday all weights and classes of
Stockers sold on a market steady to last
week.
There were 553 steers on offer
selling from $112 to $119 with sales to
$137. Bill McClure, Seaforth,
consigned one gold steer weighing
1.380 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats
for $ 137. His overall offering of thirty-
four steers averaged 1,457 lbs. selling
for an average price of $126.20. One
red steer consigned by Bill Kerslake,
Staffa. weighed 1,250 lbs. which sold
to Norwich Packers for $133.50. His
overall offering of twelve red steers
averaged 1,400 lbs. selling for an
average of $125.24.

$127.28 with their top black steer
weighing 1.370 lbs. being purchased
by Norval Meat Packers for $132. One
limousin steer consigned by Nathan

consigned nine steers averaging 1,387
lbs. which sold for an average of
$125.11 with his top limousin steer
weighing 1,495 lbs. selling to
Dominion Meats for $128.75. Mrs.
.Minerva Martin, Mount Forest,
consigned two limousin steers
averaging 1,398 lbs. selling to Holly
Park Meat Packers for $127. Her
overall offering of thirty-one steers
averaged 1,439 lbs. selling for an
average of $122.07.
Ten steers consigned by Joel Martin,
Paisley, averaged 1,472 lbs. selling for
an average of $119.71. with his top
black steers averaging 1,488 lbs.
selling for $125.75. Andrew Martin,
Chesley, consigned one roan steer
which weighed 1,395 lbs. bringing his
top price of $128. His overall offering
of fifteen steers averaged 1,441 lbs.

Wingham. averaged 1,345 lbs. selling
to Dominion Meats for $126.75. His
overall offering of twelve steers

There were 403 heifers on offer
selling from $ 112 to $ 119 with sales to

consigned one limousin heifer
weighing 1,360 lbs. which sold to
Ryding Regency for $134. Their
overall offering of twenty heifers
averaged 1,444 lbs. selling for an
average price of $124.08. One black
heifer consigned by Hugh Love,
Atwood, weighed 1,385 lbs. selling to
Norwich Packers for $132.25. His
overall offering of twenty-one heifers
averaged 1,345 lbs. for an average
price of $122.59. Merkley Farms,
Wroxeter, consigned ten limousin
heifers averaging 1,216 lbs. which
sold for an average price of $125.77
with sales up to $126.75.
Four limousin heifers consigned by
Decroft Farms Ltd., Clinton, averaged
1,348 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers
for $130.50. Their overall offering of
ten heifers averaged 1,335 lbs. selling
for an average of $125.74. Johnston
Farms, Bluevale, consigned four
limousin heifers averaging 1,236 lbs.
which sold to Dominion Meats for
$128.75. Their overall offering of
eighteen heifers averaged 1,308 lbs.
for an average price of $122.96.

offering of nine heifers averaged 1,308

holstein cow weighing 1,285 lbs.

Packing Co. for $83. One holstein cow
consigned by Denis Touzin, New
Liskard, weighed 1,250 lbs. selling to
Packerland Packing Co. for $80. His
overall offering of nine holstein cows
averaged 1,402 lbs. selling for an
average price of $65.12. Greg VanHie,
Ailsa Craig, consigned three holstein
cows averaging 1,227 lbs. selling for
an average of $61.44 with his top cow
selling to Aylmer Meat Packers for
$73.50.
There were 23 bulls on offer selling
from $58 to $69.50 with sales to $88.
Dorrel Darcy, Charlton, consigned one
charolais bull weighing 2,065 lbs.
which was purchased by Taylor
Packing Co. for $66. One holstein bull
consigned by Ikendale Farms Ltd.,
Walkerton, weighed 2,195 lbs.

There were 86 head of veal on offer.

Medicine course a requirement
With new government legislation
coming into affect April 2003,
all farmers purchasing over-the-
counter livestock medicines will
first have to complete an education
program.
The livestock medicines education
course, offered through OMAF, will
address farmer, farm family, and
animal health and safety issues.
It promotes the responsible use
and safe handling of livestock
medicines used on the farm and
looks at food safety issues that will
help build consumer confidence.

The livestock medicines education
committee that represents
commodity and industry partners
developed the one-day course
Courses are currently scheduled
for the dairy industry. The program
will be offered in Exeter on Feb. 18;
Fordwich, March 5; Clinton March
19 and Brussels, March 27.
There is a $50 fee.

BIO elections attracts candidates
Beef Improvement Ontario (BIO)
is seeing an unprecedented interest
in the 2003 election process for
directors.
This year, elections are being held
for four seats on the BIO board of
directors; two seats in the western
region, one seat in the eastern region
and one seat in the north-east region
of the province.
In the eastern region, nominations
for two candidates, Andy Millar and
Wilson Rae were received. Rick
Rickard, the director currently
holding this position has chosen not
to seek re-election and will be
retiring from the cattle business.
This region includes the following
counties: Dundas, Durham,
Frontenac, Glengarry, Grenville,
Haliburton, Hastings, Lanark, Leeds,
Lennox/Addington, Muskoka/Parry
Sound, Northumberland, Ottawa-
Carleton, Peterborough, Prescott,
Prince Edward, Renfrew, Russell,
Stormont, Victoria and York.
In the western region of the
province, five nominations were
received for the two vacant
directors’ positions: John Adema,
Robert Cartwright, Angus Campbell,
Paul Coultes and Larry Smith.
Coultes and Smith are both
seeking re-election to the board. The
Western Electoral Region includes
the following counties; Brant, Bruce,
Dufferin, Elgin, Essex, Grey,
Haldimand/Norfolk, Halton,
Hamilton/Wentworth, Huron, Kent,
Lambton, Middlesex, Niagara,
Oxford, Peel, Perth, Simcoe,
Waterloo and Wellington.
There was also a vacant position in
the Northeast region of the province
representing Algoma, Cochrane,
Manitoulin, Nipissing, Sudbury and
Temiskaming previously represented
by Ron Bailey who will be officially
retiring from the BIO board. Mark
Wilson was nominated for director
and will represent BIO members in
the Northeast region in 2003.
BIO’s Vice-President, James
McKinlay, when advised of the
number of nominations commented,
“Having this much interest in BIO’s
election process can only be

considered healthy and is an
indication that beef producers are
taking an active interest in what BIO
is doing for them and the industry at
large.”
The election closes midnight on
Jan. 31. In the event of a tie, another
election will be held by mail.
Otherwise election results will be
available on Feb. 5, from either
BIO’s website or by contacting the
office.
