(Vicky Bremner photo) Atom Bulldogs play at John Labatt Centre The Blyth Atom Bulldogs had a unique opportunity on Saturday, Jan. 18 when the Dogs travelled to London to play a game at the brand new John Labatt Centre against Seaforth. The boys dressed in the visitors locker room, which would be used that night by the Kitchener Rangers. After a brief warm-up, the clock was started to play a 60-minute, straight- time game. The Dogs started slowly finding themselves down a pair. Then Tolson Carter outskated the Seaforth D and scored bringing the Dogs within one. After another Seaforth goal, Tyler Middegaal was rewarded Bantams tie Clifford 3-3 The Brussels Bantams ended their regular season play on Jan. 15 in a match-up against Clifford. There was end-to-end play in the face-paced game that saw the visiting Clifford squad get on the board first. However, Brussels was able to tie the game before the first buzzer when Mitch Blake passed to Matt McClinchey. Assisting on the plays were Matthew Van Wyk, Michael Van Wyk (two), Laura Higgins, Caroline McDowell and Raynard. Brussels Atoms top Brussels Atoms are now into playoffs against Howick. The first game in Howick gave Brussels the advantage with a 3 - 2 win. Goals scored for Brussels were by Brendan Strettan with two and Robert Cronin with the winning goal. Zach Watson earned an assist. Friday night on home ice Brussels PeeWees' Lecomte earns hattrick The Blyth PeeWees ended the regular season on a positive note, taking Bayfield 6-2, Jan 13. Thomas Lecomte scored two of his three netters to open the first period on solo efforts. Ken Plunkett put in Blyth’s third, with help from Derek Youngblut. Youngblut bulged the twine on his own at 10:41 of the second, putting the visitors up 4-0 before Bayfield managed a point. However, the hometowners scored two quick ones late in the frame, putting pressure on Blyth. Curtis Robertson’s goal gave Blyth a three-goal lead going into over semi- were C linton Haceway Buzzards in semi-finals The Blyth PeeWee Black (Buzzards) travelled to Mildmay on the weekend for a broomball tournament. The team lost to Mildmay Black in the first round, taking a 2-1 overtime loss. Conor Miltenburg scored for Blyth with the help of Michael Hogan. In the second game, the squad was downed 2-0 by Mildmay Red. However, a 4-0 win Palmerston put them ir. the finals. Scoring for Blyth Miltenburg, Hogan and Brent Drost (two). Assists went to Brittany Bos and Aislinn Bremner. The Buzzards met Mildmay Black again in the play-offs. Up 8-0, Blyth doubled the tally in the second when Michael Van Wyk, Stevenson (two), Matthew Van Wyk (two), Peters (two) and Ryan Nesbitt each beat the goalie. Earning assists were Braydon Whitfield, Matthew Van Wyk, Higgins, Nesbitt, Michael Van Wyk and Peters. Chloe Middegaal, Janette Plaetzer and Dalton Richmond were strong on defence, helping Kennan MacDonald earn the shutout. The squad met Zurich Jan. 4 in a much tougher game. pleased the crowds again with a 4 - 2 win. Great saves were made by Brussels goalie Ryan Baker. Goals scored were Strettan with two, Christine Bone and Nic Gowing. Assists were by Gavin Bowers, Morgan Deitner, Andrew Watson. Z. Watson, Eric Dwyer. Strettan, Bone, the third. Roman Sturzenegger assisted. Blyth clinched the win when Lecomte secured a hattrick with the assistance of Plunkett and Lee Watkins. The PeeWees went nine and five in the regular season. In playoff action, they took on Wallace, Jan. 16, in the first of a best-of-five series. Youngblut’s two first period goals gave Blyth the edge in the tight- checking game. , Robertson added a netter in the second to cement the 3-0 victory. going down 2-1. Nadine Otten assisted Drost on the lone Blyth goal. Courtney Bos stood between the posts for the buzzards in each of the four games. Zurich got on the board first, but Blyth evened the tally a minute later when Higgins got the puck to Peters for the netter. Blyth then took the lead when Stevenson picked up a pass from Richmond and beat the goalie. They expanded their lead to two soon after when a solo effort by Raynard found the net. However, the defence could not hold off the home team, allowing two goals in two minutes. Blyth settled for the 3-3 tie. Howick and Gowing. Sunday night’s game in Brussels finished off this playoff series for Brussels with a 3 - 2 win in overtime. Scoring for Brussels were Strettan, Danny Donkers and, breaking the tie in the fourth period, Ty Sebastian. Assists were by Bone, Cole McLean and Strettan. Sean Cook earned the shutout with many key saves, particularly in the third period. The next game in the series will be Jan. 20. 7:30 p.m. in Blyth. Game three will be at 7 p.m., Jan. 26 in Kurtzville: Game 4 (if necessary), Jan. 27, 7:30 p.m. in Blyth and Game 5 (if necessary.), Jan 28, 7 p.m. in Kurtzville.
