PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo-Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 Away enjoying a weekend of ice fishing were Mike Boven. Joe Ryan, Harold Bridge and Doug Vincent. They were at Lake Nippising where they spent their weekend in the ice hut enjoying fishing and a good time. They caught pike, pickerel and white fish. On Thursday Walton Hall board hosted its euchre tournament. There were eight tables of players vying for first prize. The successful couple was Wayne and Joan Robinson with 88 points including nine lone hands. The second place pair of fafher/son winners were Jim and Ron Smith with 85 points. That included eight lone hands. The third place team was partners Doug Riley 'and Bill Millson with 77 points including six lone hands. Free passes for upcoming Walton euchres were won by Vera Ahrens and Clarence Hoy. Euchre is being held downstairs at Walton for the winter months. The Grand Walton Pigeon Show was held at the Walton Hall on the weekend. The show was sponsored by the Lucan Homing Pigeon Club and was well attended by many breeders who came from as far as Oshawa, Windsor Newmarket and Kitchener. Local organizers Paul and Laurie Finch were well pleased with the attendance and the local community who donated many door prizes for the event. This is the first time an event like this has been held in this area with many shows being held in the Toronto/Sarnia area. Shows are held in the winter as it is the break time in the flying season. Donations raised from the event were given to the Kidney Foundation. On Saturday evening, over 100 friends and relatives gathered al the Cranbrook Hall to celebrate the half- century birthdays of Gordon and Julia Mitchell. There were guests from around the area as well as Julia’s sister Linda and friends from Guelph. There was a fun-time, exercise program put on by the customed members of the exercise group from Brussels. Music was provided by Jack Storey and visiting and dancing was enjoyed by all. A lovely lunch was provided. Happy birthday to Gord and Julia. Returning home on the blustery Monday morning from vacation were Jim and Patty, and Cassandra Banks. They had been enjoying a week’s vacation at Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun, Mex­ ico.. They stayed at the Carico Village. They enjoyed playing tennis, swimming in the ocean and taking on their lair share ot salt water. They enjoyed a tour of the May-an Temple Ruins and sites around the area. They had good weather and good luck as Patty was the lucky winner of a bottle of tequila al one of the night’s entertainment. Canadians were the popular crowd at the resort and Patty reports it was a wonderful holiday. Celebrating birthdays this past week were Holly Mitchell, Brenda Dalton, Alisson Traviss, Murray McCall, Valerie Collins, Brett Stevenson, Tammy Hamilton, Pauline Gulutzen, Jacob Schmeltzcr, Heather Clarke, Catharine Baan, Clint Emmrich, Marni Dingman, Janice Carnochan, Connie Alcock and Valerie Bachert. Congratulations to all. McClures Members and friends of Duff’s United Church, Walton were greeted by Fred and Heidi McClure on Sunday. Anyone wishing to join an adult confirmation class should call Joan Tuchlinksy this week. Greeting this Sunday are Helen Brenie and Rod Fritz. During children’s time Joan questioned them on what they can do to help others in their church community. They responded that they can help by donating clothes, food and money. Darryl Morrison presented the Minute for Missions and congratulated the Mission and Service Fund on its 75th anniversary. It began in 1928 and has been the longest serving charitable fund giving over $973 million to support the varying needs of others. The offering was collected by Howard Hackwell and Brian McGavin . Following the service, members adjourned to the basement to enjoy a potluck lunch. The annual meeting was held following lunch with about 20 people in attendance. The new chairman for the board is Karen Hoegy. Personal achievement Yvonne DeWit, a Grey Central Public School student, had the awards wrapped up when she took home all three honours at the Brussels Agricultural Society’s annual meeting last Friday, including the David and Joan Perrie Award. The award goes to the student with the highest points in the junior section.
