Cty, seeks use of Wingham landfill
By Mark Nonkes
Wingham Advance Times
FROM BLYTH
The Wingham landfill site has
been chosen as one of two potential
county dumping stations.
The recommendation from Huron
County's Planning and Development
Department to make Wingham and
Exeter landfills accessible to other
municipalities' waste was discussed
at North Huron’s council meeting,
Monday, Jan. 20.
The report, prepared by Steve
Janes of S.H. Janes and Associates,
suggests board of management be
formed to discuss expanding
services of Exeter and Wingham
landfill sites to cover all Huron
Snow
“It sounds like Mr. Janes thinks
this is a done deal.” said Councillor
Archie MacGowan.
The report says using Wingham
and Exeter’s landfills is to insure the
most cost-effective measure of
handling municipal wastes.
Reeve Doug Layton said the plan
was eight or nine years down the
road.
Councillor Jeff Howson said he
couldn't understand why they
wanted to perform more studies
when North Huron already did their
own exhaustive study on the landfill.
“A lot of dollars are spent
foolishly,” Howson said.
Howson said, since the Wingham
landfill had the space, and as long as
it didn't have negative impact on
water or the environment, he was
supported the idea.
“Let’s not be over-cautious,”
Howson urged. “They’ve studied the
landfill over and over.”
Reeve Layton said he hoped there .
would be an economic benefit for
the municipality if they accepted
waste from across the county.
Howson agreed that North Huron
should have control of final decision
making.
Councillor Arnold Taylor said as it
is, Wingham landfill could stand on
its own for 140 years. By accepting
the suggestion, Taylor pointed out it
would drop the life of the landfill to
55 years.
“1 don’t know if I can worry about
that too much myself,” How son said.
Howson pointed out that the way
the technology moves, 55 years
down the road disposing of garbage
will probably be done in some other
manner.
Council accepted the
recommendation in the Janes’ report
to initiate discussion on forming
committees to discuss the shared
dump.

poor. (Janice Becker photo)
