As well as learning the keyboard, the children sing, compose music and record their own CD. As of last week, there was still one spot available in the Tuesday afternoon class. A parent must attend. (Janice Becker photo) Babysitting is often the first job for youth, and many can’t wait to get started. But taking care of children involves more than just playing with them - babysitting is an important job with many responsibilities. Red Cross Babysitting Training helps prospective babysitters gain skills and knowledge needed to be a competent caregiver. It also gives parents confidence that the young caregiver will be capable and responsible with their children. When hiring a responsible babysitter, parents and caregivers should: • check references and appropriate training • go over rules of the house, responsibilities and specific concerns (e.g. allergies) • leave a number where they can be reached • ensure emergency contact numbers are clearly posted When accepting a babysitting job, the caregiver should: • ask questions about responsibilities before accepting • check the home for potential dangers • get phone numbers where parents can be reached • arrive early to go over the house and meet the child before the parent leaves • discuss hours of work and hourly rate.
