The roster, announced Monday by MVCA launches groundwater program The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) is launching a new groundwater education program this month thanks to the generosity of Wescast Industries Inc. The program, entitled Groundwater...Nature’s Hidden Treasure, introduces students to where groundwater is found and the need to protect it from contamination. A financial donation from Wescast Industries Inc., along with support from Human Resources Development Canada and the Huron Stewardship Council, is enabling the MVCA to deliver the program to schools free of charge. “One highlight of the program is a model showing the connection between aquifers and wells,” said Esther Buck, MVCA community education technician. “It demonstrates that groundwater is not separate from streams, lakes and wetlands, but is part of the overall drainage system.” Dye is introduced into the model showing that when surface water or groundwater is contaminated in one location, the impacts are felt elsewhere as water moves through the aquifer. Students will observe how contamination can occur from a variety of sources: leaking underground or above-ground petroleum storage tanks, chemical the Hockey Development Centre for Ontario, was selected by Guelph Storm general manager Alan Millar, Team Ontario’s director of operations and includes 17 players from the Ontario Hockey League. spills, poorly maintained septic systems and ill-timed applications of fertilizers and pesticides. The instruction will also discuss how surface water entering abandoned or improperly sealed wells can result in contaminated water for people who pump water from the same aquifer. Each student participating in the program will receive an information and activity booklet. Parents who browse through the booklet with their children will learn about household practices which can help to protect groundwater. “We’re currently taking bookings for January and February. We expect the program will be available until the end of April,” said Buck. “Community groups and schools are invited to call us for information on booking the program.” This new education initiative is one component of the MVCA’s ongoing strategy to assess groundwater resources. The Authority is currently involved in monitoring groundwater at fourteen sites in the watershed as well as mapping areas at greatest risk for surface and groundwater contamination. In addition, the MVCA is delivering the Ontario Healthy Futures program in the Maitland watershed. One component of Healthy Futures is the provision of Toronto St. Michael's Majors’ assistant coach Bob Jones will be team Ontario’s coach, along with assistant Shawn Camp of the Guelph Storm.
