Continued from page 1 snowmobilers had found the estab lishment of official trails had allowed the OPP and club trail war dens to effectively police the trails and help gain landowner confidence. Broderick said, “It would be no different from snowmobiling. The landowners are dealt with on a case- by-case basis by the area clubs.” Councillor Bill DeJong seemed to concur commenting, “...with an organized trail you can develop a trail warden program and the OPP would be more involved.” Life seems to be pretty quiet in Ethel lately! Ruth Struthers is back delivering the daily newspaper. Perhaps we didn’t recognize how reliable and diligent Miss Struthers is about her carrier position until that dreaded morning last week when the paper was not in the box. The manager in the delivery department said he had received calls from more than half of the subscribers in Ethel, teljing of Ruth’s excellent service and asking for her back. At our house, seeing Ruth every day is something my children have embraced as somewhat of a ritual. My youngest stands inside yelling “Hi Ruf’ through closed windows. We are glad you’re back! The January COP meeting will be held this Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 DeJong went on to admit howev er, “It is a little hard for us (council) to become enthused when it is really the province which controls the rail line.” Councillor Larry McGrath agreed saying, “The province owns it but they want us to make the decision about what to do with it.” After further discussion Mayor Lin Steffler asked what specific action was being requested of coun cil and was informed that support in principle was all that was expected at the present moment.—I------------------------------------------ p.m. at the Brussels OPP office. The February meeting will be held in Ethel and will focus on the imple mentation of some pending changes to the 9-1-1 system. The changes affect some small towns such as Ethel and the township needs input from the communities to decide where to post the 9-1-1 numbers, as house numbers will no longer be used. We encourage as many people as possible to attend this informative meeting so that their suggestions may be heard. More details will come. Cornerstone Bible Fellowship Youth for Truth group meets this Thursday evening at the church. Grey Twp. firefighters meet this week for the monthly practice. I would like to apologize for the stir I created in December by writing that the dinner was on Friday when in fact it was on Saturday. Thankfully everyone made it. Bob Alexander was presented with a plaque from the department honouring his more than 40 years of service. We should all extend a hand to thank such a dedicated local hero. Finally, I would like to wish Ben Hruska a happy sixth birthday. Councillor Joe Sieli suggested that while he did not see any problems with support in principle the delega tion might have a stronger case if th.ey canvassed the landowners along the route to try to obtain their support. Council eventually passed a motion expressing their willingness to act as a facilitator between the province and the ATV clubs over the use of the former CPR rail bed. 12 tables at euchre The Ethel Euchre party was held on Monday, Jan. 6 with 12 tables in play.
