Agriculture______ Brussels Livestock report Heifers reach $130, avg. $110 to $117 Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Jan. 10 was 2.515 head of cattle, 262 lambs and goats. On Tuesday the fed steers and heifers sold $1 to $2 higher. The DI cows sold $2 higher with the balance selling under pressure. On Thursday the veal sold at prices steady with last week while the lambs sold on a strong, active trade. On Friday, the calves sold on a strong, active trade with the yearlings selling $5 higher. There were 641 steers on offer selling from $110 to $117 with sales to $127. Rick Govers, Crediton, consigned one charolais steer weighing 1,525 lbs. which sold to Holly Park Meat Packers for $127. His overall offering of ten steers averaged 1,609 lbs. selling for an average of $118.03. One limousin steer consigned by Ivan B. Weber, Paisley, weighed 1,515 lbs. selling to Holly Park Meat Packers for $126.25. His overall consignment of seventeen steers averaged 1.490 lbs. for an average price of $117.24. David Wilson, Walkerton, consigned one black steer which weighed 1,345 lbs. selling for $124. Three steers consigned by Salverda Bros., Londesboro, averaged 1,388 lbs. selling for an average of $ 120.67 with their top limousin steer weighing 1,400 lbs. selling for $122.50. Gilbert Janssen, Hanover, consigned two limousin steers averaging 1,340 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $126. His overall offering of six steers averaged 1,393 lbs. selling for an average of $119.22. Two limousin steers consigned by Tom Ellerington, Centralia, averaged 1,453 lbs. selling to Holly Park Meat Packers for $124.50. His overall offering of twenty-seven steers averaged 1,466 lbs. for an Great Lakes foundation offers manure storage upgrade funds The Great Lakes Renewal Foundation (GLRF) is providing financial assistance for a limited number of manure storage upgrade projects in Huron County. The GLRF is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to cleaning up and renewing the Great Lakes. The Foundation was established in 1998 with an initial $5 million grant contributed by the Government of Ontario. The purpose of the manure storage program is to prevent the contamination of surface and groundwater from manure and exercise yard runoff, and to encourage environmentally responsible manure handling. The Ausable Bayfield and Maitland Valley Conservation Authorities will be administeringthe program. Projects with the greatest potential to improve water quality will be selected for funding. To be eligible for funding an Environmental Farm Plan must be completed for the property where the manure storage is to be located. A 50 per cent grant will be available to a maximum of $15,000. No herd average of $118.92. His overall offering of thirty-nine steers averaged 1,529 lbs. selling for an average of $116.33. One limousin steer consigned by Sam M. Martin, Chesley, weighed 1,420 lbs. selling to Holly Park Meat Packers for $123.75. His overall offering of eighteen steers averaged 1,579 lbs. selling for an average of $114.64. There were 467 heifers on offer selling from $110 to $117 with sales to $130. Wayne Rowe, Woodham, consigned one gold heifer weighing 1,440 lbs. which sold to Norwich Packers for $130. His overall consignment of thirty-four heifers averaged 1.273 lbs. selling for an average of $117.94. Three limousin heifers consigned by Dennis Schroeder, Dashwood, averaged 1,167 lbs. selling for an average of $126.82 with his top two averaging 1,133 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for $127. Jon Miller, Ayton, consigned one limousin heifer weighing 1,405 lbs. which sold to Holly Park Meat Packers for $127. Twelve limousin heifers consigned by Merkley Farms, Wroxeter, averaged 1,203 lbs. selling for an average of $ 126.24 with sales up to $126.50. Len Wilhelm, Walkerton, consigned three limousin heifers averaging expansion or new buildings will be considered. All manure and runoff storages must have a minimum 240 day capacity. Eligible projects include: solid manure storages with runoff containment, roofed solid storages, liquid manure tanks, and runoff containers for exercise yards. Only $225,000 has been allocated for about 15 manure storage projects in 2003. Inquiries and applications will be accepted by Conservation Authority staff in January and February. In March, staff and a review committee of farm group representatives will review and prioritize applications. The review committee will make the final decisions in April. Their overall offering of three veal calves averaged 683 lbs. selling for NMA implementation could face delays A Huron County planner expects implementation of the regulations under the Nutrient Management Act will not take place by April 1 as originally indicated. Huron County has been an opinion leader in the Nutrient Management process, adopting some of the first regulations in the province and has made presentations at the hearings held in the local area.
