Sports •» On ice Local skaters compete at London Festival Eighteen area skaters competed at the 30th annual Great Lakes Winter Skating Festival held in London on Jan. 10-12. These skaters are members of the Brussels, Blyth and Wingham Skating Clubs, coached by;Michelle Blake. They all skated solo performances. The results were as follows: Brussels - preliminary B. All these skaters will be competing at the Interclub North Skating Competition on Saturday, Jan. 25 held in Wingham at the North Huron Wescast Complex. Power skaters, dancers pass level testing There was fast-paced hockey action at the Brussels, Morris, and Grey Community Centre this past Sunday when the Minor AAA Midget Lakers faced-off against Windsor. (Vicky Bremner photo) Bantams topple Elma-Logan The Brussels Bantams continued their winning ways in two games last week. • On Jan. 8, they welcomed Zurich to their home ice. The teams traded goals in the first two frames, taking a 2-2 tie into the third. Brussels scorers were Chris Jutzi and Matt White with assists going to Greg Bowers, Shayne Cochrane and Brad Mc- Kague. Though Zurich was able to tally one goal in the third period, Brussels opened and held the lead off netters by Matt McClinchey, Jutzi and McKague. Earning assists were Blyth PeeWees take 2 victories The Blyth PeeWees had a successful week, earning two wins in league play. With Hensail in town, Jan. 6, Blyth struck first when Thomas Lecomte picked up a pass from Derek Youngblut for the goal. John McDowell also assisted. Down 2-1 late in the second, Youngblut and McDowell once again set up the play with Curtis Robertson putting the puck in the net. Blyth was again behind by one early in the third when a shot from Ken Plunkett tied the game. Robertson and Lee Watkins assisted. The contest against Elma-Logan was far more decisive, with Brussels topping the home team by 12 points. Brussels struck early, scoring four in the first from Prior, Adam McClure, Jutzi and White. Assists went to McClure, Steven Ropp (two), and McClinchey. While holding Elma-Logan off the scoreboard, Brussels added six in the second for a 10-0 lead. Jordan Campbell, Bowers (two), J. Cochrane, McClinchey and White beat the goalie. Aiding the plays A solo effort by Youngblut at the five-minute mark gave Blyth the lead al 4-3. With the Hensail net empty in the dying seconds, McDowell shot the puck between the pipes to segl the win. In another hard-played match, Blyth met Mitchell, Jan. 11. Youngblut and McDowell put the squad up 2-0 by the end of the first, with help from Robertson and Tony Bean. Cochrane, Blake and McClinchey. After allowing White and McClinchey to score early in the third, Elma-Logan finally beat the Brussels netminder to stop the shut­ out bid. Brussels came back with two more off the sticks of Ropp and Jutzi. The hometeam finished the game with a goal in the final minute for a 14-2 loss. Assists in the third period for Brussels went to McClinchey, J. Cochrane (three), White (two), Bowers and Cory Chapman. the second to draw to within one, but Plunkett restored the lead just seconds later. After watching their opponent notch another, Robertson tallied Blyth’s fourth of the game before the end of the period. Up 4-2, the teams traded goals in the third for a 5-3 Blyth win. Robertson scored his second of the contest to top of the tally. The PeeWees begin playoffs Monday, Jan. 20, against Wallace. The Blyth Skating Club is back on the ice after a short Christmas break and raring to go for the second half of the skating season. Prior to the break, many young power skaters were tested with the following results: Prepower Level A, Jordan deBoer; Prepower Level B, Dalton Richmond, Ryan Nesbitt, Drew Wood, Ruben deVries, Nathan Verburg; Level One Bronze, Micah Nonkes, Alex Peters, Brayden Whitfield; Level One Silver, Nathan Plunkett; Level One Gold, Johnathon Atkinson, Andrew Bailey, Kennan MacDonald; Level Two Bronze, Jordan Bakelaar, Zack Horne, Jacob Nonkes, Aaron Popp, Mark Siertsema; Level Two Silver, Snowmobile stolen in McKillop On Jan. 11 at noon OPP were contacted over the theft of a snowmobile on Hullett-McKillop Road in McKillop Twp. part of Huron East. Sometime overnight a shed was entered and a 1995 yellow Grand Touring Ski-doo was stolen. The snowmobile had been left inside the Kirby Cook, Adam Cronin, Abby McGavin; Level Two Gold, Danielle Bean; Level Three Bronze, Tyler Middegaal; Level Three Gold. Matt Chalmers, Brandon McGavin, Collin Whitfield; Level Four Silver, Grant Sparling; Level Four Gold, Kendall Whitfield. In the Canskate Program the following skaters were successful in passing their levels: Level One, Teresa Atkinson, Brooke Middegaal, Damien Cronk-Riley, Ailene deVries, Jonathon Hakkers, McKala Nonkes, Jordan Teed; Level Two, MacKenzie Nesbitt, Jordan Teed; Level Three, Lauren Cronin; Level Five, Alex Raynard, Sheree Uyl; Level Six, Kelly Cook. shed with the keys in the ignition. A short time after this report the unit was discovered abandoned not far from the residence on a side road. Minor damage was done to the machine. Anyone who can help in solving this case is asked to call the local OPP or Crime Stoppers.
