Council
considers
work for
pumphouse
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
Henry Rouw of the Ontario Clean
Water Agency (OCWA) updated
North Huron council at the Jan. 6
meeting.
Rouw explained that the plumbing
at Blyth's main pumphouse was
outdated and inoperable. “We have
lost prime on the high-lift pumps so
have been into predicaments
already.”
As Blyth is having its system
upgraded this year up to government
standards, Rouw said it would be a
good time to look at re-plumbing the
pumphouse. This could be included
in the engineer’s drawings, then
when tenders were to go out council
could ask for separate quotes.
“Once we have the quotes it
would be practical to re-plumb at the
time.”
Council gave approval to have
having B.M. Ross cost the work.
Rouw then told council that the
flow meter at the Wingham sewage
treatment plant should be installed
within the next month or two.
Also, he said that one of the four
aerators is out of service and needs
to be rebuilt. The cost, including
$1,000 return “freight to Montreal,
should be $4,100.
The ultra-violet disinfection
system is “up and running”,
however an intensity probe needs to
be installed for an approximate cost
of $3,400.
With regards to Wingham water,
Rouw informed council that the
abandonment of wells one and two
as recommended by should be
complete by the end of March.
At the Blyth sewage works, Rouw
said this year they will be putting
aeration into the sludge tank. Cost of
this is between $8,000 and $10,000.
They are also switching to 12 per
cent chlorine, the cost of which will
be between $2,000 and $3,000.
Following Rouw’s report
Councillor Jeff Howson questioned
whether the re-plumbing at the
Blyth pumphouse would mean there
would be no further incidents of
dangerously low levels as have been
experienced on occasion in recent
years.
While he couldn’t commit to a 100
per cent guarantee, Rouw did say he
felt the difference would be
significant.

The Farmer's Almanac was not
too far wrong when it predicted a
major storm around Jan. 15. The
snowmobile people will be glad of
the snow, so they can get sledding if
the snow stays and doesn’t blow off
the fields. We noticed a few out last
night wanting to get started.
Don’t forget euchre is played
every two weeks at the Legion. It
starts on Monday night, Jan. 13.
The seniors’ potluck lunch is at
Memorial Hall on Jan. 22 at noon.
Cards to follow.
Gayle Poore hosted a birthday
party for Deb Hakkers on Jan. 11.
Those attending were friends and
neighbours.
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Jan. 12 were Joann
MacDonald and Judy Gleave.
Ushering was Cliff Snell. Guest
musician was Lynda Lentz-
MacGregor.
Cheryl Cronin sang a solo Ring
Out the Sweet Message. The
children’s hymn was Praise our
Maker.
Rev. Eugen Bannerman asked the
children what Mom and Dad did for
them when they were sick. The
answer was that they gave them
medicine and made them feel better.
Jesus came to Peter’s house in
Caperinium. Peter’s mother-in-law
was sick and Jesus took her hands
and made her feel better and she was
able to get up and get them
something to eat. The news spread
around the small town and many
people brought their sick family
members to Jesus to heal.
The dramatized lectionary reading
was Genesis 1: 1-5. Participating
were Amanda and Wyatt Bearss. The
responsive reading was the 29th
Psalm. The Gospel reading was
from Mark 1: 29-34.
Rev. Bannerman’s message to the
adults was entitled Jesus and
Healing. Jesus had a twofold
purpose in his earthly ministry. One
was to talk about the coming of the
kingdom of God. The other was to
bring health to people in need of
healing. The church usually focuses
on the spiritual mission but it should
also focus on the importance of
physical well-being.
Rev. Bannerman had picked up a
pocket book entitled, The 5-Day
Miracle Diet written by Adele Puhn.
If we follow a sugar-reduced diet we
will be more focused and experience
a greater sense of well-being.
Puhn’s plan is simple. Eat those
foods that keep your blood sugar and
insulin levels balanced. The five-day
diet is designed to give you good,
wholesome foods, and in the process
to reduce cravings for sweets,
starches and carbohydrates.
