The meeting opened with a moment’s silence in memory of Jane Devries who passed away on Dec. 22. Jane was a devoted WI member. The Ode and Mary Stewart Collect were repeated and Lucy Hesse, president, gave a short reading “If You Can’t go Over, Go Around. Secretary Leona Armstrong read the report from November and December meetings and treasurer Edna McLellan gave the financial report. Plans were made for a soup and sandwich lunch followed by euchre in the Brussels library on Thursday, Feb. 6 at noon. Marguerite Thomas introduced the guest speaker Nelva Scott, whose message was about diabetics. The number of people with diabetes is growing. It is treatable but not curable. There are three types of diabetes. The type 1, which is juvenile diabetes, is usually hereditary. Type 2 is adult and type 3 is gestational. Mrs. Scott explained the symptoms and what can be done to treat them and the complications which may arise. Happy Birthday was sung to Mrs. Armstrong. Following the meeting a surprise auction of wrapped articles was held with Mrs. Hesse as auctioneer. The proceeds of $61.75 from the auction are to go to the Adelaide Hoodless Home Upkeep Fund. H H n HI n n n n time with lots of games, the usual practices and the pre-arranged tournaments making for a near overload of the national sport. Be calm parents, it will soon be spring. The required annual meetings of many organizations are now Yippee, a snow day. Actually most of the weekend let us know that January had arrived. There is something very calming about a white landscape with lots of snowflakes in the air. It is a good time to really think about how badly grab your mitts and hats and go to you have to go somewhere. So enjoy the time given to you by Mother Nature’s schedule. The hockey crews are in their busy At the Branch the Kyoto Accord. I found one that had several suggestions that each of us can do to improve our air quality. The drivers of the world can stop idling their vehicles. It is no longer efficient to let your car run while you do errands and the vehicles now scheduled so get your reports in and do not need any more than a minute save that date. Your attendance is very important, for it’s the members, not the executive who make an organization flourish. So be sure to attend and voice your opinion. The Brussels Skating Carnival is scheduled for Feb. 2. All the members are hoping you’ll be able to attend. For $5 you’ll get a look at the Wild, Wild West on skates. So the arena at 1 p.m. that day. You’ll have a good time. There is lots in the news and papers in the last few months about to warm up. Save our planet and do not let uceless carbon dioxide float into the atmosphere when you pop in for the mail or other wee er rands. The other suggestion that is very doable is to replace regular light bulbs with the small energy-efficient fluorescent ones. If each of us does a little we may leave some good air for our descendants, but we all need to get serious about protecting the earth. Enjoy the snow Bye now, Betty G.W.
