(Janice Becker photo) Brussels Bantams top Wingham Bly th PeeWees earn win, loss to end year The final two weeks of 2002 were very busy for the Brussels Bantams, playing eight games in league matches and the Silver Stick Tournament. Brussels met Milverton Dec. 16 in regular season play, taking a 2-1 lead into the second period off goals by Brad McKague and Greg Bowers. Mitch Blake assisted. The home team managed to even the tally late in the third, giving Brussels just over four minutes to secure a win. A shot from Matt McClinchey with 18 seconds remaining, hit the target and locked up the Brussels victory. Two days later, Teeswater visited Brussels for a high-scoring contest. Watching Teeswater notch three quick goals early, Brussels was spurred to action when McClinchey and Chris Jutzi drew the score to within one. Assists went to Chase Chapman, McKague, Bowers and Shayne Cochrane. The scoring seesawed throughout the second with the period ending in a 5-5 tie. Getting on the board for Brussels were Nathan Prior, McClinchey and Adam McClure. McKague, Prior, Steven Ropp and Andrew McDonald assisted on the plays. Brussels held Teeswater off the sheet in the third while tallying two of their own for the 7-5 win. McClinchey hit for his third and fourth and McKague earned his third assist. On Dec. 21, Brussels shooters were again hot when they took to the ice in Wingham. They doubled up their opponent in the first with two goals from McClinchey, and singles from McKague and Blake. Cory Chapman, McClinchey, Jordan Campbell and McKague assisted. The squad added another four to the total in the second taking the tally to 8-5. Scorers were McClinchey with three and Ropp. Aiding on the goals were Mc-Kaguc, McClure and Jutzi. Each team added one in the third with McClinchey notching his sixth in the 9-6 victory. Brussels trounced Palmerston, Dec. 23, scoring 11 to the home team's single. Scorers were McClinchey (four), Matt White, McClure (two), Ropp, Jutzi, McDonald and Chase Chapman. Assists were earned by McClinchey (three), Cory Chapman (two), Ropp, Jutzi, White, Prior, McClure and Bowers. The team then went on to play in the Kincardine Regional Silver Stick competition, in Lucknow, beginning Dec. 27. Brussels doubled Clinton with a 4- 2 win. Goals were scored by White, Ropp, Jutzi and Prior. Assists went to McDonald, Mc-Kague, White and McClinchey. In their second game of the contest, Brussels met Ripley in a close match. Ripley held a 1-0 lead through two periods to watch the win slip away when White and Campbell scored midway through the third. McClure, Cory Chapman and McClinchey assisted. McClinchey nailed a hattrick in the squad’s game against Wiarton on Dec. 28. Two goals from McClinchey plus singles from Jutzi and Prior took Brussels to the 6-2 win. Assisting on the goals were Cory Chapman, McClinchey (two), McKague and White. The three wins put them into a semi-final game against Tara, Dec. 29. It was an excellent game with end- to-end play. Great stops were made by both goaltenders. The strong Brussels offence was thwarted as they were unable to get on the scoreboard. Tara notched a single goal at 10:20 of the second period for the 1-0 win. They also played the final two games without receiving penalties. The squad kicked off 2003 with a tournament in Chesley, beginning Jan. 3. Brussels took on the home team in their first contest, coming out strong in the opening frame with three goals. Scorers were Ropp (two) and White with assists going to Prior and Chase Chapman. Carrying a 3-1 lead into the second, Brussels topped off the Continued on page 9 Blyth PeeWees finished out 2002 with a win and a loss in WOAA play. An exhibition game against Monkton away, Dec. 28, gave Blyth a 3-0 victory. In what was a penalty- free game for the visitors, the squad worked hard to solve the Elma- Logan goalie, who did everything but stand on his head. It took the final period, but once the weak spot was discovered, Blyth poured it on scoring three in the final five minutes. Bulging the twine were Curtis Robertson, John McDowell and Derek Youngblut. On Dec. 30, the squad took on Teeswater in another exhib­ ition match-up this time on Tykes lose to Seaforth The Brussels Tykes played Seaforth Dec. 28. Brussels opened the first period with a rush on Seaforth’s net and a great shot by Brody TenPas. Unfortunately the older, stronger Seaforth team dominated the remainder of the first period with Seaforth scoring several times. In the second period Brock McLean and TenPas led many rushes to Seaforth’s end but to no avail. Hayden TenPas made some great saves for Brussels in net. Brussels continued its defensive play in the third period with more saves by TenPas. Novices grab big victory The Blyth Novices secured a big victory Dec. 19 over Wallace. Goalie Kayla Black played a great game, letting in just three goals with the enthusiastic help of defensive players Shelsie Popp, Carly Whitfield, Alicia Middegaal and Nathan Plunkett. Cody Richmond scored for the Blyth squad in the first in answer to Wallace’s two netter. Kevin Pennington assisted. It was no advantage, however, as the visitors skated to a 7-3 win. Blyth was kept off the board until the second period, when McDowell lit the light with help from Roman Sturzenegger. With Teeswater leading by one, Ken Plunkett sunk in the second Blyth goal in the final minutes before the buzzer only to see it undone a minute later with a goal by the visitors. Sturzenegger again got the assist on the Blyth point. A strong third period for Teeswater put the game out of reach for Blyth though Robertson did manage one late in the game. Helpers were credited to Plunkett and Lee Watkins. The final score was 4-0. On Saturday, Dec. 21 in Clinton the Tykes started off strong with TenPas scoring four quick goals. Clinton came back and tied up the score, until Brock McLean scored the fifth goal putting the team back in the lead. TenPas scored another, but Clinton took charge and ended on top at 9-6. Despite the final score Colton Hastings played an excellent game in net. Sean Dale, Mitchell Kramer, Tanner Cardiff and Mitchell Kellington all had great shots, but were stopped by the strong Clinton goalie. when Spencer Stevenson and Connor Prescott each added one for the 3-2 lead. Pennington. Johnathan Atkinson and Stevenson earned assists. Prescott notched two in the third for a natural hattrick then saw Pennington and Richmond each add singles. Assists went to Atkinson, Stevenson, Drew Wood and Middegaal. Wallace added one in the dying seconds but took the 7-3 loss.
