Race for the puck
As a Howick PeeWee attempts to shoot the puck into open ice, his Brussels opponent makes
every effort to push the rubber into the Howick end. When the two teams met Saturday
afternoon, Howick took an early lead only to watch Brussels rebound with four quick goals in
the Second. (Janice Becker photo)

Bly th PeeWees earn
win, loss to end year
The final two weeks of 2002 were
very busy for the Brussels Bantams,
playing eight games in league
matches and the Silver Stick

Brussels met Milverton Dec. 16 in
regular season play, taking a 2-1 lead
into the second period off goals by
Brad McKague and Greg Bowers.
Mitch Blake assisted.
The home team managed to even
the tally late in the third, giving
Brussels just over four minutes to
secure a win.
A shot from Matt McClinchey
with 18 seconds remaining, hit the
target and locked up the Brussels
victory.
Two days later, Teeswater visited
Brussels for a high-scoring contest.
Watching Teeswater notch three
quick goals early, Brussels was
spurred to action when McClinchey
and Chris Jutzi drew the score to
within one. Assists went to Chase
Chapman, McKague, Bowers and
Shayne Cochrane.
The scoring seesawed throughout
the second with the period ending in
a 5-5 tie.

McClinchey and White’s goals in
the first helped maintain a 2-2 tie
into the third when the Brussels
shooters opened up a sizeable lead.
Two goals from McClinchey plus
singles from Jutzi and Prior took
Brussels to the 6-2 win. Assisting on
the goals were Cory Chapman,
McClinchey (two), McKague and
White.
The three wins put them into a
semi-final game against Tara, Dec.
29.
It was an excellent game with end-
to-end play. Great stops were made
by both goaltenders.
The strong Brussels offence was
thwarted as they were unable to get
on the scoreboard.
Tara notched a single goal at 10:20
of the second period for the 1-0 win.
They also played the final two
games without receiving penalties.
The squad kicked off 2003 with a
tournament in Chesley, beginning
Jan. 3.
Brussels took on the home team in
their first contest, coming out strong
in the opening frame with three

with a win and a loss in WOAA
play.
An exhibition game against
Monkton away, Dec. 28, gave Blyth
a 3-0 victory. In what was a penalty-
free game for the visitors, the squad
worked hard to solve the Elma-
Logan goalie, who did everything
but stand on his head. It took the
final period, but once the weak spot
was discovered, Blyth poured it on
scoring three in the final five
minutes.
Bulging the twine were Curtis
Robertson, John McDowell and
Derek Youngblut.
On Dec. 30, the squad took

Tykes lose to Seaforth
The Brussels Tykes played
Seaforth Dec. 28.
Brussels opened the first
period with a rush on Seaforth’s
net and a great shot by Brody
TenPas. Unfortunately the older,
stronger Seaforth team dominated
the remainder of the first period
with Seaforth scoring several
times.
In the second period Brock
McLean and TenPas led many
rushes to Seaforth’s end but to no
avail. Hayden TenPas made some
great saves for Brussels in net.
Brussels continued its defensive
play in the third period with more
saves by TenPas.
Novices grab big victory
The Blyth Novices secured a big
victory Dec. 19 over Wallace.
Goalie Kayla Black played a great
game, letting in just three goals with
the enthusiastic help of defensive
players Shelsie Popp, Carly
Whitfield, Alicia Middegaal and
Nathan Plunkett.
Cody Richmond scored for the
Blyth squad in the first in answer to
Wallace’s two netter. Kevin
Pennington assisted.
Blyth took command in the second

home ice. It was no advantage,
however, as the visitors skated to a
7-3 win.
Blyth was kept off the board until
the second period, when McDowell
lit the light with help from Roman
Sturzenegger. With Teeswater
leading by one, Ken Plunkett sunk
in the second Blyth goal in the final
minutes before the buzzer only to
see it undone a minute later with a
goal by the visitors. Sturzenegger
again got the assist on the Blyth
point.
A strong third period for
Teeswater put the game out of reach
for Blyth though Robertson did
manage one late in the game.
Helpers were credited to Plunkett
and Lee Watkins.
The final score was 4-0.
On Saturday, Dec. 21 in Clinton
the Tykes started off strong with
TenPas scoring four quick goals.
Clinton came back and tied up the
score, until Brock McLean scored
the fifth goal putting the team back
in the lead.
TenPas scored another, but
Clinton took charge and ended on
top at 9-6.
Despite the final score Colton
Hastings played an excellent game
in net. Sean Dale, Mitchell Kramer,
Tanner Cardiff and Mitchell
Kellington all had great shots, but
were stopped by the strong Clinton
goalie.
when Spencer Stevenson and
Connor Prescott each added one for
the 3-2 lead. Pennington. Johnathan
Atkinson and Stevenson earned
assists.
Prescott notched two in the third
for a natural hattrick then saw
Pennington and Richmond each add
singles. Assists went to Atkinson,
Stevenson, Drew Wood and
Middegaal.
Wallace added one in the dying
seconds but took the 7-3 loss.
