Another Christmas passed, another year is gone and if you’re like us it was very good indeed. Family and friends, love and memories, thoughtful gifts to share. Toss in lots of food, drink, music and laughter and Christmas 2002 is added to the list of good ones. Visitors were all about as we At the Branch celebrated the 12 days of Christmas and for most of the time the weather seemed to co-operate as the sleds and shoes hit the snow for lots of fun with our guests. And it really does take the 12 days of Christmas to empty the sweet containers that we worked so hard on in Advent. Good customs are hard to break. The season of Epiphany is now here, right after the 12th day of Christmas, and so another celebration is called for. Ethel United Church hosted an Epiphany party on Saturday so we joined Christians of the world moving into the season of light. Historically we are remembering the Kings of the Christmas story and their search for the Baby from Bethlehem. The United Churches celebrated with stars and candles and of course food. No good King would leave home without a good supply - right? As we start into January we have lots of time to contemplate - gone is the hustle of the season past and we can take the time to really think. Part of my thoughts already are on Bill King and Jane DeVries. Death came to call to both our friends in a quick and /dramatic manner and so like them both - pretty efficient, no nonsense, little help needed. Bill and Jane were part of the whole community, not just in one select group and so as the year progresses we’ll find that we’ll miss that familiar smile and hello. We retain some pretty fine memories. Be sure to share yours with their kids the next time you see them. On Dec. 28 the boys from Perish, Joshua Gropp. Rob McKercher and Thomas Ireland played at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern, the place, they tell me, where the Rolling Stones played their first Canadian show, oh so many years ago. As you’re enjoying the silence of January, reading books and cleaning closets, remember that the 5Rs really likes your leftovers. But unless you’re giving us an extra bag tag please be selective and put the garbage in your garbage bag and your donations in another for the 5Rs. We’re open Tuesday to Saturday and a call to the store could help you with delivery of your treasures to be recycled. Thank you in advance. Enjoy the beauty of nature this week. Bye now, Betty G.W.FROM BRUSSELS 40 attend Christmas potluck By Jo-Ann McDonald On Dec. 20 the Brussels Legion had a potluck Christmas supper with over 40 people attending. There were 34 who participated in the gift exchange. On Saturday, Dec. 21 afternoon the weather wasn’t the best and there were only six tables of brave euchre players. The first-place winners were Lloyd and Lillian Appleby with 72 points. The second-place team was Edna McLellan and Neil Hatt with 66 points. Coming in for third place were Len and Betty Archambault. The luck lone hand winners were Linda Stevens and Glen Sellers. Following the euchre were the Christmas draws. There were over 44 prizes to be won. The Sunday night singles dance had a small crowd of around 60 enjoying the music of the Blue Diamond Trio. On Sunday evening, Dec. 22 comrades of the Branch gathered for a service of remembrance for Comrade Bill Coutts at Schimanski Family Funeral Home. The funeral service was held on Monday, Dec. 23. We express our condolences to the Coutts family. A surprise on Saturday evening, Dec. 28 was a busload of Seaforth comrades dropping in on their way home from an afternoon at Harriston Legion Branch. New Year’s Eve at the Branch had about. 60 out to enjoy the music provided by Pa’ Maxwell. There were party hats and noise makers and after ushering in the New Year with cheers and kisses, a potluck meal was put out for all to enjoy. There were also a dozen door prizes given away. ACW meets In December the St. John’s Brussels ACW members enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner at the Merry Piper restaurant. A goodly number of members. Rev. Tom Wilson and some of the members’ husbands feasted on the dinner. Rev. Wilson hosted the second annual Rector’s New Year Levee at the Anglican Church Rectory on New Year’s Day. Parishioners from Trinity Blyth and St. John’s, Brussels enjoyed refreshments and time to socialize. The Thursday evening darts had 14 players out to start the new year. The first place team was a trio - Katie Harrison, Ron Schmitt and Bob Cochrane. The second place team was Carol Gross and John Harrison. Having the high was Ron Schmitt. The Friday night supper of sausage and sauerkrau was enjoyed by about 30 diners. This week is ham and scalloped potatoes. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 10 tables of players. Coming out on top were Glen Sellers and Ed Stewart with 74 points. The second place winners were Neil Hatt and Edna McLellan with 71 points and third place was taken by pair Shirley Hackett and Kay McCormick with 68 points. The lucky Ione hand winners were Linda Stevens and Gord Bosman. The Sunday night singles dance crowd of 75 enjoyed the music of Country Motion. We send out congratulations to comrades Lyle Brothers and wife Alice who celebrated 63 years of marriage this past week. The lucky membership draw winner this week was John Harrison. Coming up in sports is euchre for the zone in Howick. The sign-up sheet is at the Branch. Service Officer comrade Mabel Glanville reports that the provincial service officer will be in Brussels Feb. 20. If you wish an appointment, contact Mabel. Membership chairman John Harrison reports there are still some members out there who have not paid their dues for 2003. If you can’t get into the Branch. P.O. Box 128 will gladly accept delivery. It’s the new year and maybe some Comrades could think about becoming more involved in the Branch in some way. There are a variety of committees which need some extra people. Elections are in April. The general meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of the month. Entertainment committee for January is Bob Bridge, Lawrence Machan, Ken Miller, Leona McDonald, Karin McDonald, Greg Wilson. LeeAnn McDonald, Barrie Currie and Jo-Ann McDonald.
