FROM WALTON
News from WLS
The Walton Little School pre-
school class has been learning about
Las Posadas, a Mexican celebration.
They have been learning how to
count in Spanish, singing Feliz
Navidad, and how to make pinatas.
The part they enjoyed the best was
the breaking of the pinatas.
There has been lots of excitement
as they have been singing Christmas
carols and reading many great
Christmas stories to celebrate the
holidays.
The toddler class also made pinatas
in celebration of Las Posadas. They
spent much of the week making
Christmas ornaments for their
parents. They enjoyed their favourite
Christmas songs, Jingle Bells and
Frosty the Snowman.
The students of Walton Little
School wish everycine a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year and
will see everyone again in early
January when they return.
Walton was well represented at the
Miss Brussels Curling Club Pageant
on Monday evening for the
Christmas party. Ms Connie Alcock
(aka Murray Pepper), Ms Brenda
McIntosh (aka Gary Pipe) and Ms
Jo-Ann McDonald (aka Mike
Thomas) modelled and answered
questions for the evening's MC, Jeff
(skin-tight bright orange leisure
suit), Cardiff and the celebrity
judges. Having the difficult task of
judging were Marilyn Munroe (aka
Marilyn Jones), Jean Chretien (aka
Stewart Steiss) and Shania Twain
(aka Fran Bremner). •
The People's Choice Award for the
evening went to the seductive Ms
Brenda McIntosh. It was great fun
and thanks to entertainment chief
Gary Pipe.
Our condolences to Ken
McDonald and family on the passing
of his wife Margaret last week.
Congratulations to Chad
McCallum and Crystal Semple on
their engagement last week. I hear
the wedding will be sometime in
2004.
Congratulations to Rob and
Audrey Shortreed on the birth of a
son on Wednesday morning. Adam
Thomas arrived and is doing well.
So are Morn and Dad.
The ladies of the Walton Women's
Institute enjoyed a delicious
Christmas dinner at the Walton Inn
for their December meeting on
Wednesday. There were seven
members present and following the
meal they had their meeting and gift
exchange.
On Thursday, the Walton Inn held
its Christmas smorgasbord meal and
over 50 hungry Walton supporters
attended. At the meal's conclusion,
even. Santa Graeme in the spirit of
giving, gave all a clementine to take
home for their stockings or for mid-
afternoon snack.
The Walton Hall euchre had a
good crowd of eight tables of players
vying for the prizes. It ended with a
tie between two pairs each having 68
points. Splitting the prize money
were Jean Bewley and partner Viola
Kirkby with partners Jean Keyes and
Helen McKenzie. Right behind in
third place with 67 points were
partners Marjorie Smith and Vera
Ahrens. The lucky lone hand
winners were Bob Regele and Lois
Cunningham.
There were 14 door prizes given
away and a delicious lunch served.
The next euchre will be Jan. 16.
The community was saddened by
the news Friday morning of the
passing of long-time resident Bill
Coutts. Living around the Walton
area and a long-time employee of
McGavins, he was well known. A
•familiar face on the streets while out
walking the little dog, he always had
a smile and hello for all. Our
condolences to wife Marie and
daughters Karen and Connie and
their families.
Congratulations go to two families
down the line of the former 16th of
Grey. Tim and Lisa Fritz have
welcomed son number three to their
family and Ron and Kim Strohm
now have a trio of girls with their
new daughter.
Rounding out the month of
December by celebrating birthdays
are Kevin Gillis, Stefanie Rijkhoff,
Stephen Bernard, Marjorie
Humphries, David Pethick, Jeff
Lewington, Geoff Dalton, Jean
Bewley, Paul McCallum, Lorraine
Nelemans, Monique Baan, Clayton
Fraser, Alice Searle, Ryan Bremner,
Anne (Watson) Carreri, Reagan
(Godkin) Blair, Kerrie Blake, Mark
Gillis, Betty McCall, Judy Emmrich,
Audrey Hack well and Paul
Flaxbard. Not a single Christmas
Day baby out of the bunch.
I would like to wish everyone a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year and a prosperous 2003.
Thanks to everyone who
contributes news items to keep
Walton an interesting place to
live.
