Judges make choice for best decorated The waiting continues - the anticipation of Christmas is in the air. The Brussels Public School concert was last week and as usual the children did a line job with the level of hope and joy in the gym almost measurable. It was good to hear the band and see the level of musical competence rising. Once again I was reminded of what a caring community we have as I watched the children with the instruments and remembered the drive for the initial purchase nearly 15 years ago. What a good investment that was and what pleasure and talent it has produced. Wade Philip Machan was welcomed into the United Church family on Sunday looking pretty sharp in his shiny white suit. His attentive manner during the sacrament made parents Paul and Janice relax and grandparents Doug and Florence, Ivan and Bonnie, uncles and cousins quite proud to call him their own. By Jo-Ann McDonald The week at the Brussels Legion Branch has been busy. Both Branch and Auxiliary members gathered at the funeral home on Tuesday evening for the Legion Service of Remembrance for Comrade Doreen Rutledge. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon and the luncheon was served by the Auxiliary ladies at the Legion Branch following. Staying on for a visit around the Brussels and Mitchell area are Doreen's sister, Adamae and daughter Alana. The Thursday evening mixed blind darts had a good bunch take aim. The first place pair was John Harrison and Sandra Josling. The Gropps had a houseful this weekend to celebrate the birthdays of Joshua, Dec. 12; Mitchell, Dec. 16: Nic, Dec. 17. Visiting is an important part of this season and many of the church and community groups add a little joy by taking goodies or flowers as a visible token of the visit. These visits indicate to the person that they are still in the minds and thoughts of the group. By sharing gifts and time we are reminded of the reason for the season. The anticipation of the celebration of the birth of the baby Jesus and the need to hope, love, live in peace and joy continues. Traditions are a way of maintaining continuity in our lives and we all have them whether ages old or newly started. Stockings hung, turnip with turkey, ornaments with good memories, fruit cocktail with Christmas brunch the list goes on in each home. Singing carols is part of our festive joy and the community carol night is one tradition that has gone on for years. So please come and join us for an hour of just singing, nothing else, just sing all the carols that you can handle, the 23rd at 7:30 p.m. in Brussels United Church, Start a new tradition for your family. Lie sure to enjoy this time of year. Don't let the hustle and bustle overtake your better judgement. Bye now, Betty G.W. The judges have made their choices. This year Greg and Nanci Ducharme and family are the winners of the best decorated home in Brussels. The judges were impressed by the new additions to the lawn. The home has a classic elegance, with decorations that brighten it during the evenings, but also enhance it in the daytime. The judges went off main street this year for the best decorated business. A welcoming entrance, greenery. and the twinkling reflection of lights in mirrors as seen through the huge picture window made Turning Heads and Making Waves, owned by Janice Machan, this year's selection.
