Exhibit shows Sallows' work
Rehearsing her role
Eleven-year-old Shaunessy Sinnett of Goderich was just
one of the Huron County youths who were part of the cast
of The Nutcracker, presented last Thursday at the Blyth
Festival Theatre by Ballet Jorgen. She practised her
mouse movements between the 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. shows
which were both sold-out. (Janice Becker photo)
Stratford Festival
reaches historic high
A record number of playgoers
helped the Stratford Festival of
Canada celebrate its golden 50th
season, with 672,924 tickets sold to
plays at the Festival's four theatres
from late April to Nov. 24.
"It's been an intensely memorable
year," says Executive Director
Antoni Cimolino. "Our 50th season
playbill spoke both to our, mandate
and to our future, and its success
must be credited to our staff and
artists, especially Artistic director,
Richard Monette. We attracted
record attendance with seven

LORD OF THE RINGS
One of the great Canadian photog-
raphers at the turn of the 20th centu-
ry, Reuben R. Sallows was an inter-
nationally recognized artist whose
depictions of rural Canadiana pro-
vided insight into this country's
infancy.
As a commercial artist, Sallows
worked from a studio on the Square
in Goderich. His photography took
him across the country, working for
the Canadian Department of
Immigration, then north to docu-
ment the building of the CPR.
With the assistance of the Ontario
Trillium Foundation, the Reuben R.
Winter begins at Joseph Schneider
Haus with a series of theme week-
ends exploring the activities that the
Schneiders and their neighbours
would have been doing to prepare
for the Christmas season and for the
long winter ahead.
Until Dec. 24, visitors to the
museum will enjoy a special exhibi-
tion, "...from Realms of Glory", a
study of angels as they are depicted
in Fraktur, textiles, stained glass,
and other forms of decorative art.
Presented in co-operation with
Wellington County Museum and
Archives, this exhibit investigates
the power accorded to these heaven-
ly messengers, past and present. The
Museum Gift Shop also features
angelic gifts and other creative crafts
for Christmas gift-giving ideas.
Tallow to Tapers is Dec. 7 and 8.
Tallow is transformed into dipped
and moulded candles for the long
winter ahead.
The Pennsylvania-German
Breakfast Basics is Dec. 14 and 15.
Meat left over from the butchering
was made into Pawnhaas, a
favourite Pennsylvania-German
breakfast food. Served with mush 'n
milk, rye bread and apple butter, and
even a piece of pie, the typical 19th
century breakfast was a hearty meal.
Saint Martin's Goose is Dec. 21
and 22. A goose is cooked in the
woodstove and other uses of the
goose, its wings and feathers are
demonstrated.
Toys and Games are Dec. 23 and
25. On the last two days before
Christmas, the museum is open for
19th century toys and games that the
entire family will enjoy.
A Candlelight Evening at the
Schneider Haus is special way to
celebrate the holiday season with
Sallows Gallery, opening in the
spring of 2003 in the newly-renovat-
ed Goderich Public Library, will
house the largest public collection of
Sallows's work. The founding of the
gallery is proudly supported by the
Maple Leaf Chapter IODE.
Though having recently received
over 200 Sallows works from his
family, the gallery is seeking further
contributions from the public.
"Because of the nature of the busi-
ness of a photography studio around
the turn of the century, the record of
Sallows's work is far from com-
plete," says gallery curator Robin
friends and family. On Sunday, Dec.
15 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. there will be
an opportunity to sample
Pennsylvania-German Christmas
cookies, hear favourite Christmas
stories told by Folk Artist-in-
Residence Mary-Eileen McClear
and enjoy the 19th century seasonal
music of the Playford Players.
The cost is $3/person or $10/fam-
ily.
The historic house is open
Wednesday to Saturday from 10 to 5
and on Sunday from 1 to 5.
The historic house will be closed
from Dec. 25 to Feb. 15.
Joseph Schneider Haus is located
at 466 Queen St. S., Kitchener. For
more information call 519-742-
7752.
Wark. "For example, we understand
that upon Sallows's death, a large
number of glass slides of his work
were simply buried somewhere in
Colborne Twp. There are hundreds
of his works still in this community
alone."
Wark would like to hear from any-
one with Sallows photographs in
their collection or stories and memo-
ries of the artist.
For further information on donat-
ing to the collection or to set up an
appointment, the gallery staff can be
