Season of God's promise
By Brent Kipfer
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
"Why is there shooting in
Bethlehem?" asked a member of our
church youth group earlier this year.
"Why can't God destroy all that's
harmful?"
At Christmas we celebrate the
surprising entrance of God into our
world. An animal shelter became the
birthplace of an extraordinary king:
Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Christians believe that the baby who
sleeps in Mary's arms has come to
turn the world upside down - the
Messiah sent to set things right.
Many people are puzzled by this.
Christmas celebrations may be shut
down in Bethlehem again this year;
the threat of violence still looms
over the town first visited by Jesus.
What has changed since his birth?
The Jewish philosopher Martin
Buber asked a similar question. He
admired Jesus - but could not accept
him as the Messiah. He observed
that "world history has not been
turned upside down to its
foundations - that the world is not
redeemed. We sense its
unredeemedness."
Speaking in 1933 - the same year
Adolf Hitler rose to power - Martin
Buber could see plenty of evidence
that the earth is still broken.
Even so. Christians believe that
Jesus does bring the kingdom of God
near in his own person; when we
receive Jesus, we receive the
kingdom of God. It is ours; we can
enter the kingdom today. At the same
time, we are still waiting for it to
come. So Jesus taught us to pray:
Your kingdom come, Your will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven.
We are still waiting. During
Advent, Christians remember that
we are living in the season of God's
patience. We prepare to celebrate
that the Messiah has come - and that
the Messiah is coming again. The
saving action of Jesus is not yet
finished. We pray for Jesus to enter

our lives afresh today, to rule and
reign in our own lives and in the
whole world. It is not complete yet,
but one day it will be. Peter urges us
to have patience as we wait for the
return of Jesus:
The Lord is not slow about his
promise. as some think of slowness,
but is patient with you, not wanting
any to perish, but all to come to
repentance. -
....regard the patience of our Lord as
salvation.
God does not want anyone to
perish; at the same time, the Lord
will not force anyone into his
kingdom. We long for the day when
Jesus will set all things right. Still,
that time is delayed because there
are still others whom God wants to
catch into His grace and bring into
His kingdom. God is not powerless
to intervene - but He is merciful -
not wanting any to perish.
This is certainly a season of
patience for parents and children.
Our two sons are pouring over toy
catalogues with wide-eyed
excitement. They are eager for the
day when gifts will be received and
unwrapped.
The Holy Spirit leads us to wait
for Jesus with similar anticipation:
keen to receive the gift of His
presence in our lives in a fresh way -
and ready for the final unwrapping
when we will be able to celebrate
that indeed, "the kingdom of this
world has become the kingdom of
our Lord and of His Christ!"
