By using power from your sled's engine, it eliminates the need for bothersome battery packs and constantly replacing or recharging batteries. The opinions expressed are solely those of the author could be adapting to the departure of two top administrators, and the arrival of their replacements. Education Superintendent Ray Contois and Director of Education Gaetan Blanchette, both of whom had long careers with the board as educators and administrators, will retire at the end of the calendar year. Larry Langan, who replaces Blanchette as of Jan. 1, predicts the transition will go smoothly. Langan has been officially employed by the board since Nov. 1, as part of the transition process, but his dedication to the new position was evident for many months previously. A,former superintendent of schools in the Catholic board serving London and area, he has been attending Huron-Perth board meetings since last June. "I carefully researched this school board prior to filing my application. and I plan on ending my career with the Huron-Perth Catholic school board," Langan explained, following the inaugural meeting. The incoming director praised the board in a number of areas. He suggested the trustees have a keen knowledge about the schools and communities within Huron and Perth Counties, that they have "a strong sense of the history of Catholic education," that they readily give of their time to help the board, and that they respect the opinions of their colleagues. During several weeks spent visiting each school in the board, Langan says he also learned that Huron-Perth students, teachers and administrators exhibit a pride in the accomplishments and values of the board. "People are very proud of this organization," he said. "They recognize that it has a reputation for quality Catholic education, and they're proud to share that. When you're the new guy coming in, and people are like that, it's a powerful thing." Langan's immediate goal is to continue acclimatizing himself with the school board, as well as the people it serves and employs. Then, perhaps some- time next -year, he hopes to lead the board through a process aimed at developing a long- range plan. - "It has been six or seven years since the board has engaged in any strategic planning," he said. "It's time to start thinking about the future." On a wider scale, Langan said he hopes all Catholic school boards in Ontario can "continue to demonstrate to our public our distinctiveness and the value that Catholic .education' brings to our communities." At the Dec. 2 inaugural meeting, decisions were also made about the other trustee responsibilities. Mary-Catherine McKeon of RR3, Goderich, who joined the board in 2000, will be vice-chair. Committee chairs are Mike Miller in Education, Ron Marcy in Management, and Vince McInnes in Personnel.
