(Keith Roulston photo) Heart anti Soul efforts continue Residents of Blyth and surrounding areas are encouraged to donate before Dec. 31 so that they may be issued a tax receipt that would enable them to use their donation on their 2002 tax returns. 0 4 4 VILAGE The Blyth & District Community Centre is now in full operational order and all users are enjoying the newly renovated facilities. Most visitors to the arena and auditorium are amazed that the project was able to be completed in such a short period of time. "The Heart and Soul committee is extremely pleased with the outpouring of donations that have come in to date and the success of the auction held in September," said spokesperson Anne Elliott. However, the project still requires additional funds. At this point in time, it appears that the project will come in on budget and the committee is paying off the last of the final bills. The Heart and Soul project needs to raise $116,000 to complete the payments. This figure includes an estimated cost to finance the construction costs until the Superbuild grant money is fully received. The Superbuild commitment is $30,000 less than the projected donation was to be which has increased the fundraising necessary to cover the construction expenses. Letter THE EDITOR, I just wanted to pass on my compliments to the organizers and participants in the Santa Claus Parath. I think for a first-time evening event it can be judged a resounding success. The parade was a delight to the ear and eye and I look forward to many more successful parades. Yours truly, Cathrine Campbell. By Keith Roulston • Citizcu publisher Problems with low levels of radon in a Seaforth water well could affect people well beyond the town, a Huron County health unit official told county council. Radon, discovered in water tests of one Seaforth well on Oct. 21, is a colourless, tasteless, odourless, chemically inert radioactive gas that is formed by the natural radioactive decay of uranium in rock, soil and water. Since the water from deep wells may originate as far away as Sudbury, other wells may be affected, suggested Penny Nelligan, director of the Huron County Health Unit. For this reason officials beyond this area have shown an interest in the events in Seaforth. There are no standards in Canada for how much radon can be in water for it still to be safe. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends a level of no higher than 4000 pico-curies (pCi) per litre but the Seaforth well registered 11,340 pCi per litre. Another new Seaforth well also showed similar levels. 523-9187 Open Tues. - Sat. am - 5 pm For $5. (toonie for kids) you can 4 sample everyone's chili and you can pick your favourite. Spoons, cups and ballots will be provided. 4 Huron East Councillor Lin Steil-1er told council that American Water Services, which manages the Seaforth water system, has put forward a plan for dealing with the problem to the Ministry of Environment and is waiting for the ministry's response. A search of records showed that the issue of radon in the water of that well had first been raised with both the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Labour as long ago as 1982. The Ministry of Labour had declared it safe for workers to be around the water, despite the potential for the gas to enter the air from the water-. The Ministry of Labour had suggested blending water from two wells to reduce the level of radon, Steffler said it concerned her that the Ministry had asked the health unit to remove a copy of this correspondence which had been posted on its website. She interpreted the request as an attempt of the ministry to "pull" its letter.
