A Grade 12 student at Central
. Huron Secondary School is the first
from either the local public or
separate school board to sign on for
a swine herdsperson apprenticeship.
- The signing was through the
Ontario Youth Apprenticeship
Program (OYAP), which offers a
chance for students as early as Grade
II to obtain academic credits
towards their diploma, while
working as a signed apprentice.
Steve Van Amersfoort, 17, of
Blyth, is working at a Premium Pork
operation, located just east of Blyth,
under farm manager Jeff
Williamson. Keith Vardy of the
Mininstry of Training, Colleges and
Universities presented him with his
papers for signing last week.
Glenn McGregor, co-op education
co-ordinator for both boards
explains that there are 130
apprenticeship trades offered and
that there is a high demand today
because of the opportunities and the
dollars.
The swine herdsperson is a new
apprenticeship, McGregor said,
which has come about for several
reasons. "There is a need for a
skilled labour force in the pork
industry, there is a decrease in the
farm family operation, which
provided skilled labour and there has
been growth in the pork industry."
Students interested in OYAP must
first apply. If accepted, either the
student or the co-op teacher will find
a placement for them. If the
arrangement is satisfactory for all
parties, then the student is signed as
an apprentice.
The apprenticeship, McGregor
said, is essentially a contract
between the student, the employer
and the ministry. It can be a paid
position, and McGregor said, as the
apprenticeship will take longer than
a student's remaining school years,
"definitely should be after they
graduate."
The $40 signing fee, typically paid
is waived under OYAP, McGregor
said.
2 arrested
On Nov. 21 during the early
morning Huron OPP officers
assisted by the London 'OPP Drug
