THANK YOU
On behalf of the Blyth & Area Business Association we
wish to thank everyone for attending the Lighting of
the Lights held Friday evening, November 15th. Thank
you to John Stewart, representing the council of North
Huron, for officially opening the Christmas season,
Mrs. Cheryl Cronin and the students from Blyth Public
School for leading us in the singing of Christmas carols
and Eric Coates for entertaining the children (and
adults) by telling them a story. Everyone enjoyed hot
chocolate and homemade cookies donated by members
of the Blyth & Area Business Association. Thank you to
all who visited our stores and helped make the
weekend a big success. Wishing all a Very Merry
Christmas and all the best in 2003.

FROM BLYTH
The winner of the 125th calendar
draw on Nov. 23 was Paul Fear,
RR4, Brussels.
Monday night euchre is back. By
the time you read this Nov. 25
euchre is over but the next euchre
will be Dec. 9 so come out and enjoy
the fun at the Legion at 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 27 is the Swinging Seniors
Christmas dinner at noon.
Ushering at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Nov. 17 were Doug
Howson and Fred Hakkers. Guest
musician was Margaret Kai.
The choir's anthem was God, Our
God, Your Glorious Name.
The children were called to the
back of the church to participate in
the dramatized scripture of Mark 10:
13-16. The children were led to the
front as in Bible times when
children were brought to Jesus. The
disciples drove them away, but Jesus
said "Let the children come onto
Me."
Those taking part were Amanda
Bearss, Amelia Carter-Brown,
Megan Watson, Brandilyn Bearss,
Wyatt Bearss and Nicole Meier. The
children stayed at the front for the
baptism of Alison Courtney Snell,
daughter of Craig and Julie (Carter)
Snell. Alison was presented to the
congregation and the children went
down to Sunday School.
Brenda Brooks presented the new
hymn books which have been
purchased by the bond left to the
choir by Winona McDougall and
some in memory of John
Hesselwood, Dwight Campbell and

The men and women in blue are
making their presence known in area
schools.
At the Nov. 18 meeting of North
Huron council Sgt. Jeff Taylor
explained that each of the schools in
the county had an officer assigned
specifically to it.
Sr. Const. Don Shrophsall,
community services officer, as part
of his duties visits schools to deliver
programs such as bus safety, drug
awareness, bullying and youth and
the law. With so many schools,
however, it was determined that an
officer's presence on a regular basis
is important.
Frank and Cenetta Bainton. Lavern
Clark accepted the new hymn books
on behalf of the congregation. John
McDougall. son of Winona
McDougall said a few words to the
congregation.
Rev. Eugen Bannerman took the
congregation through a tour of the
new hymn book Voices United.
Rev. Bannerman's meditation was
The Power of Hymns. He told some
stories of how hymns have affected
some people. One story was of a
mother having a very hard time who
decided to end it all for her daughter
and herself by closing all the drafts
and turning on the gas but not
lighting it. While lying there she
heard the radio playing the hymn
What a Friend We have in Jesus and
she thought of all the good things
she had in life.
She got up and opened the
window and turned off the
gas.
Thus, each school now has an
officer who will stop in regularly.
According to Shropshall their role is
to walk the halls, speak to the
students and staff to hear any
concerns or problems. "They are
supposed to find time every week on
their day shift to do this," he said.
The officer at Brussels Public
School is Dave Muncey, while Russ
Nesbitt is in Blyth. Kim Stapleton is
currently a ssigned to Grey and Jeff
Pollard is the officer in East
Wawanosh. Hullett's is Paul Dobos.„
"The kids really seem to be
starting to enjoy the police presence
around them," said Shropshall.
