HPCDSB puts parcel o land up for sale
By Stew Slater
Special to The Citizen
The Huron-Perth Catholic District
School Board will place a single-
family residential-sized parcel of
land in Goderich, adjacent to St.
Mary's elementary school, up for
sale. Trustees approved the sale at a
regular meeting Monday, Oct. 28.'
The lot, approximately 66 feet
wide and 140 feet deep, is next to the
playground at the rear of the property
currently occupied by the school, at
70 Bennett St.
It's actually the third of three lots to
become separated from the property
originally meant to be occupied by
the school, with the other two severed
lots already having been sold and
converted to houses,
Indeed, the two houses act to block
the third lot from the view of people
in the school, making it difficult for
school officials to monitor what's
happening on what remains school
board property.
If all goes as planned, the third lot
won't be school board property for
long.
In compliance with provincial
legislation, the Huron-Perth board
must first offer the property to the
Avon Maitland District School
Board, the Town of Goderich, the
County of Huron and this district's
French school board.
If no offers are received within 90
days, then the property can be listed
on the open market.
"I can't imagine any of (the school
boards or municipal governments)
wanting what is essentially a building
lot," commented trustee Ron Marcy,
management chair for the board.
As is the case for property matters,
the sale was first discussed behind
closed doors, with only the vote
taking place in open session. But
Marcy and management
superintendent Gerry Thuss readily
provided details about the sale in the
open meeting.
And in an interview following the
meeting, Thuss added that the lot has
become a convenient shortcut for
people to walk between the school
and an adjacent apartment building,
on their way to a nearby fast food
restaurant.
He explained that the lot is not used
by St. Mary's students for outdoor
activities, and selling it is a much
better solution than erecting a fence
around it but still having to maintain
the grass.
Man pleads guilty
The • young man charged in
connection a rash of automobile
thefts in the area, appeared at a bail
hearing in Sarnia Oct. 28.
According to OPP Sr. Const. Don
Shropshall David James pled guilty
to all but one of the eight charges
laid against him.
James remains in custody. A pre-
sentence report is being prepared for
his next court appearance Dec. 2.
