FROM BRUSSELS
At the Branch
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Last week began at the Brussels
Legion with the general meeting
held Monday evening at 8 p.m. It
was the annual visitation by the
Zone Commander Bob Grey and
Deputy Zone Commander Shirley
Chalmers.
As part of the visitation it is
required that they inspect the minute
books from the beginning of the new
term and the financial records for the
general account and Nevada
account. An audited copy of the past
year's financial statements are also
required by them.

ghosts and goblins of
Halloween were a drippy, cold crew
as they made their rounds of friends
and family to greet and gather last
Wednesday. The nasty weather did
nothing to deter the enthusiasm of
our visitors as they made their stops.

The meeting was carried on in its
usual manner with 21 comrades
present.
Requests for the continued
support of the PeeWee hockey team
to enter Young Capada hockey
tournament and the Zone Legion
hockey tournament in. Lucknow
were both passed.
The Thursday night mixed blind
darts was cancelled due to
Halloween but will return at its usual
time of 8 p.m.
No experience or skill is necessary
and you do not need to be a member
of the Legion to play.

The former wardens of our
community were in Lucknow on
Friday night to recognize the year's
work of Ben VanDiepenbeek and
county council. George, Jack and
Leona were part of the crowd who
celebrated the many good things we
have in Huron, especially the
people.
Neil McGavin spoke on the
similarities between government
and farming mostly his area of
expertise, farm machinery. With the
required stories to bring the point
home I think Helen Johns and Paul
Steckle, head table guests are
thinking some new thoughts as they
continue with their jobs after
listening to Neil.

The United Church in Brussels
celebrated 126 years as a
congregation on Sunday with Joan
Golden reviewing the past. A
window tour of the beautiful stained
glass in the sanctuary reminded all
of the past while reviewing their role
and responsibility for the future.
Once again this week there are lots
of things to do and see. The Duff's

The Christmas tour is this
weekend. If you are part of the
Business Association then Rene may
have a job for you. Give her a call

came, the idea remained.
It is observed to remember all
those Canadians who gave their
liyes during the 20th century in
wars, conflicts and .peacekeeping
duties. Since the formation of the
Royal Canadian Legion in 1926,
they have been dedicated to
perpetuating the memory of
Canadians who served and died in
battle.
It was in 1931 that Parliament
amended the Armistice Day Act to
ensure that Nov. 11 would be set
aside as a day distinct and apart from
any other observance upon which
the nation could pay special tribute
to those "who gave their lives that
freedom might prevail."
The Legion is continually striving
to ensure that all Canadians
remember the 110,000 Canadians
who died.
In 1915, Canadian army doctor
John McCrae wrote the poem In
Flanders Fields.
The poppy is worn on your left
side above your heart and the poppy
isjaid to rest on Nov. 11 if possible,
at the cenotaph.

Zone Commander visits for meeting
On Saturday morning, the weather
co-operated for the Cadet and
Legion members to participate in the
poppy canvass. A dozen members
went door-to-door. Donations
gathered through the poppy fund are
used for veterans and their comfort.
Anyone wanting more information
on the poppy fund can contact
chairman, Linda Bird.
The craft show was held on
Saturday and Sunday with all tables
full. Crafters were pleased with the
crowd and the weekend. The bake
table had a bounty of fresh-baked
goodies and the donated door prizes
were wonderful.
We hope that everyone can attend
the Remembrance Day services at
their nearest Legion Branch. If you
can't attend we hope that you will
observe the Two Minutes of Silence
wherever you are at 11 a.m.
In 1999, the Royal Canadian
Legion, in conjunction with
Veterans' Affairs Canada,
reintroduced the tradition of
observing Two Minutes of Silence,
which was first ol2served.on May 14,
1918, when the Bishop of Pretoria
suggested a prayer be offered up for
