Students decorate doors for Halloween
The halls at Brussels Public are
filled with bats, pumpkins,
scarecrows and witches.
The student council organized a
fun-filled event for the entire school,
a door decorating contest. Everyone
got into the spirit of things, it was
amazing to see so many different
and talented ways to decorate their
classroom doors.
With such a difficult task to judge
the committee selected the Grade 6
room as first prize.
To keep the spirit going the
student council also planned an
orange and black day for Friday,
Oct. 25. There was orange and black
everywhere, from socks to hair. The
Grade 2 room was selected as having
the most orange and black.
In the afternoon special activities
were planned for Grades 1-5 in the
gym. Things like .face painting,
Halloween crafts, dress-up relays
and palm reading were available to
the students.
Everyone was encouraged to
donate some pocket change to
donate to UNICEF.
Kindergartens have been busy this
week learning all kinds of things
about Halloween. They have been
making crafts and enjoying some
early treats too. One of their
homework assignments this week
was to think of words that rhymed
with Boo and Treat.
The. Grade 1 class has not only
been getting ready for Halloween
but the entire autumn season. They
have been talking about harvesting
the crops that are in the fields and
the machinery the farmers use to
harvest them. They made some
Canada geese and have them flying
south in their room.
The Grade 2 class news is reported
by Tori Kellington: "Today me and
my class are finishing up our
witches. They are looking really
good. Mrs. Lee put up a bunch of
pictures with Halloween characters
on them. Cassandra drew a really
good picture of a cottage, a cat and a
witch. Me and the class did some
pictures of symmetrical shapes and
they look the same on every side."
Ms Ewener's room, has been
writing Halloween stories and
poems. They are beginning to work
on book reports as well. In math
class they have been learning about
3-D shapes, they even tried making
some of their own 3-D shapes out of
marshmallows, and of course got to
eat them when they were done.
In art they made some really nice
silhouette pictures which are pasted
onto a pumpkin shape. They can be
seen on the classroom windows.
Mr. Weber's Grade 4/5s completed
their first draft of Halloween stories
and plan to finish them up next
week. In geography they are going to
begin a fact wheel project. This
involves learning all about the
provinces of Canada.
In math the Grade 4 students begin
discussing Granite Island by
counting minerals. The Grade 5s
have been discussing architecture
and the different shapes it involves.
The class has also enjoyed
learning about the federal
government, they excitedly reported
lots of information about cabinet
ministers the parliament buildings
and are trying to find out the
Queen's real last name.
The power of 10 is what the Grade
6 students will be thinking of this
week in math. They are going to be
finishing their posters for the Legion
Remembrance Day poster contest. In
science they are talking about the
diversity of living things.
The Grade 8 class would like to
thank everyone in the community
who came out to support their
haunted house. An extra big thank
you to Abi and Charles Corbett for
organizing the entire spooktacular
event.
The Grade 8s and their parents
will be hearing a presentation on
Oct. 30 from the Camp Celtic
organization. They are going to he
planning their year-end trip there
this year. This is a new venture for
Brussels Public School.
On Halloween the Grades 6, 7 and
8 students will be holding a dance in
the gym. Anyone with a mask will
get in for a reduced rate/
They are working on book reports
this week and are waiting on the
marks from their NHL projects that
they made for math class. The
project was all about graphs.
The Grade 7s are busy making
divisibility posters in math class
using eye-catching techniques.
The school office would like to
remind everyone that Monday, Nov.
4 is an early dismissal day and that
Tuesday, Nov. 5 is the flu shot
clinic.
