Hospital board hears of early start to flu season
By Mark Nonkes
Wingham Advance-Times
Physicians are offering people a
chance to beat the high fevers, head
aches, severe 'muscle aches. dry
coughs, chills, sore throats and other
symptoms associated with the flu
this year.
The only way to fight the bug is to
roll up your sleeve and get the flu
shot.
Vaccinations will be administered
at the Wingham and District Hospital

There's been a change in care at
the Wingham and District Hospital
and more are planned for the future.
Patients are now being matched
with nurses instead of nurses being
assigned rooms, the clinical leader
told the hospital board Thursday.
10 a.m. to 9 p.m., tomorrow, Oct. 31
'from 7:30 a.m. to 5. p.m and Nov. I
from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Dr. Marie Gear told the Wingham
and District Hospital board that there
has already .been an influenza out-
break this season in Mitchell.
Gear said it is early for the flu to
start and will only be a matter of time
before it hits Wingham and area.
In an interview before the meeting,
Dr. Beth Henning of the Huron
County Health Unit said there is a lot
of information going around that
isn't true about the vaccine.
"We've changed the way people
have done their job around here,"
Liz Phalen said.
The nurses are matched by the
seriousness of a patients' needs. It is
hoped the new method will improve
job satisfaction among the nursing
staff. However, Phalen admitted the
initial steps weren't that easy.
"Nurses don't like anything to
One rumour that's not true is that
you can get the flu' from getting the
vaccine. Henning said that the
is very safe and there is no live
virus in the shot so no one can get the
flu from it.
She also said the side effects from
getting the flu are much worse than
getting the mild side effects from the
shot.
In fact, Henning said that about
6,700 Canadians die from flu-related
illness every year. The virus spreads
very easily as it becomes airborne
after an infected person coughs or
change," she said.
Phalen said the change is a result
of a survey done in the, hospitals
last fall. The report, by the College
of Nurses, made nine suggestions on
where the hospital could improve.
This first recommendation has
been up and running since June
"We're still working through lots
and lots of little blips," Phalen said.
sneezes. She said influenza can be
particularly dangerous for small chil-
dren and the older generation. Even
the most healthy people in society
can get the flu, Henning said.
A shot is needed every fall (during
flu season regularly from November
to April), Henning explained,
because the virus changes every
year. She also said antibiotics have
no affect on whether or not a person
contracts the virus and often do little
to help it. The shot protects people
for about six months.
Some people worry about an aller-
gic reaction which Henning calls
"very rare". She said there is no alu-
minum in the flu shot and actual
mercury amount is very small.
"We have more people interested
in getting the vaccine than not once
they get the information," 'Dr.
Henning said.
There will also be non-mandatory
flu shot clinics for all school children
throughout the region. -
If people have questions they can
contact their family doctor.
