PAGE 15 Front the Minister's Study The rhythm of life, of love continues By Re‘. Richard Golden Monkton United Church This past Sunday turned our clocks hack an hour as we left daylight saving time behind and returned to standard time. Forward and back, a rhythm of time, Of life. When I go for a walk with our dog there are many times we walk without the leash. She rushes ahead to check out the underbrush, down a ditch bank. Yet she returns to me, someone who cares and watches over her, one who loves her, and she returns that love by trying to care for me and protect me in her own way. The rhythm of life, of love continues. We live life in a rhythm, venturing away, and returning home to those we love and who love us. It seems that the longer we are separated from those we love, the more we truly miss them even when we are in touch by phone or email every few days. The sense of glorious love and excitement for the return, the renewal of the relationship is eagerly anticipated. A few weeks ago was the first long weekend since many family members may have left for school, and had an opportunity to return home. The joy of their return was great, even though it was expected. Imagine the joy to be felt by the return of someone you deeply love, yet have had a disagreement with, and now the unexpected chance to get together knowing there has been a genuine change of heart, a realization that a loving relationship is what is truly important in life, a return to those who truly love and care for you. God knows, and welcomes all who seek to enter. or re-enter a genuine, loving relationship with our Lord. What is important in this world? Wealth, fame fortune, or those most important to you? What is important to God? Things, treasure or recognition, don't cut it, because, remember God made it all. God made us, gave us life, gave us breath, gave us so very much, even God's own love. All that was left, was for people to turn and realize the source of all that is, cares for them, loves them beyond measure, and then, returns that love in the manner given. The most important things in this world are our loving relationships. All of these relationships involve love, a freely given • and received love. I once held a job where there was very much a sense of deep caring and concern between those who did the work and those who were to see that it was done. It felt like one large, caring family I was proud to be a part of. As time went on, and people changed, so too did the sense that this was a family. Instead it became a business relationship in which the sole concern between management and labour was the paycheque. The sense of genuine caring, joy, and love, disappeared. In short, something you were willing to devote yourself to, above . and beyond the call of duty, because your felt valued, loved, and were more than another number, became only a job. So much is lost when only the material matters. When the Pharisees asked Jesus which law was the greatest, Jesus responded quoting the sh' ma the ritual answer to this question and was the first thing memorized by every Jewish child and recited several times a day by devout Jews. "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind." This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it; "You shall love your neighbour as yourself." What is most important in life? It is to be in a genuine loving relationship with God, your neighbour and yourself. Mountains erode, things wear out, no longer holding Our interest, but to love and be loved is the most important, the most enduring thing that can ever happen to anyone. You are loved by God, who created you, by Jesus who came to earth -for you and by the Holy Spirit the power and love of God given for you. Open your heart to it. acliept it. and in return, enter into a relationship that will last for eternity. Thanks be to God, Amen.
