THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2002. Sports Organizers prepare for Silver Stick tourney By Jim Brown Wmgliam Advance-Times The first of three regional Silver Stick tournaments being played at the North Huron-Wescast Community Complex is less than three weeks away, but the organizers are ready for the annual events. Sixteen teams are competing in the annual Midget tournament, which is played Nov. 18-24. Mitchell returns to defend the B-1 championship the team captured last year. with a 4-1 decision over Walkerton. Walkerton is also back this year, looking to win the Wingham Regional and a berth in the International Silver Stick in Sarnia in January, 2003. Tavistock won the B-1 consolation title, with a 5-2 decision over Seaforth. Both teams return this year in an effort to reach the championship final. The Brussels Bantams took a loss and a win in play last week when they met Wingham and Ripley. Wingham came to town Oct. 23 and opened the scoring in the contest. However, Brussels soon evened the tally when Chris Jutzi put one between the pipes with the help of Matt McClinchey and Cory Chapman. Wingham retaliated before Brussels again tied the scored at 5:58 of the first when McClinchey's shot hit the twine. Wingham scored their third before the buzzer. Brussels opening the scoring in the second when Andrew McDonald took a pass from Steven Ropp and Brad McKague to even the score at three. They took the lead for the first time when McClinchey scored his second of the game. Wingham drew even; but saw McClinchey's third put the home team up 5-4 by the end of the period. Assists went to Mitch Blake and Chase Chapman. However, Wingham's offence would win as they notched three in the third while holding Brussels to just one. Matt White scored with the help of Jordan Campbell. Wingham took the 7-6 win. On Saturday, the squad travelled to Ripley. McClinchey was hot, scoring five of the team's seven goals and earning an assist. McClinchey's first period netters, with assistance from Ropp, McDonald and Chase Chapman, put Brussels up 2-1. • Also competing in the B-1 division are Kincardine, Goderich, Listowel and Twin Centre. With the absence of defending B-2 champions, Tara, the Wingham Care Partners of Belgrave (formerly the Lions Club Midgets) are intent at regaining the crown they earned two consecutive years, 1999 and 2000. In 2001, they had to settle for the consolation championship, with a 5-0 decision over Blyth. The team Tara defeated in the B-2 championship last season, Teeswater, is also not returning this year. at least .not as the Gay Lea Butter Kings. • The Teeswater Midgets have combined forces with Belmore this year to form a single team. • Also looking to win the B-2 championship and a berth in the Iliturnational championship in Forest in 21)03, are Arthur, Mildmay, Brussels notched two more in the second, one from McClinchey off Nathan- Prior and Jutzi, and another from White with McDonald and Scott Phillips assisting. However, Ripley put three in the net to even the score. After seeing Ripley take the lead midway through the final frame, Brussels exploded for three goals, clinching the 7-5 victory. Scorers in the third were McClinchey with two and McDonald. Greg Bowers, White, Ropp and McClinchey earned assists. Bulldogs win 4-2 The Blyth Bulldog Atom Rep Team had their first game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 17 in Drayton. Although Drayton jumped on the scoreboard first Blyth doubled the score to win 4-2. Goals were scored by Dallas Pennington (two), Lucas Cooke and Tyler Middegaal. Goaltending was shared by Sheldon Reid and Grant Sparling. Other team members include Tolson Carter, Colin Bokhout, Adam Cronin, Trevor Raynard, Tyler Black, Collin Whitfield, Michael McDowell, Kirby Cook and Matt Popp. The coaching staff of Chad Haggitt, Kirk Stewart and Mike Haggitt were pleased with the team's effort and will work on any shortcomings as the year progresses. Howick, Lucknow and Ripley. As in past years, Midget Regional Silver Stick co-ordinator Grant Currie said they had no trouble filling this event. "Because the minor hockey season is just getting underway, teams enjoy coming to this tournament because they can play teams they may not compete against the rest of the year," he stated. "They are able to find out how they 'stack up' against the rest of western Ontario." Competition in the week-long tournament gets underway on Nov. 18, with two games. Two games are also played on Nov. 19 and 20, with three games played Nov. 2I and 22. The Wingham Midgets face off against Lucknow at 7:45 p.m. on Nov. 22, immediately following the opening ceremonies. Representatives from Silver Stick 'International as well as many local dignitaries will be on hand for the official 'dropping of the puck.' Sixteen games are scheduled for Nov. 23, with eight played in Wingham, and another eight scheduled for the Blyth District Community Centre this year, rather than the Belmore Community Centre. "We are proud to be using the Blyth arena this year," stated Currie. "Not only is Blyth part of North Huron, but with the newly renovated arena, the teams will be playing on two large ice surfaces and have large dressing rooms," he added. Currie noted that although they had to sever a 20-year association with the Belmore Community Centre Board, they are hopeful they can build an even stronger relationship with Blyth. "Both the Wingham and Blyth arenas are under the direction of the North Huron recreation department," he stated. "This should make it easier to book the ice time for the required dates from year-to- year." The 20-team Atom tournament will run from Dec. 2-8. Tournament convener is Jon Bateson. The PeeWee 'B' Girls tourney will go Jan. 9-12 with Kate Skinn as the tourney convener. Nr. Bantams win, loss For more information call: Shir-Time Parties 41.
