Local students among Madill award winners
Award recipients
The presentation of the George Menzies Endowment Fund was made to
Brussels Public School granuates at F.E. Madill Secondary School's
commencement on Friday night. Receiving the fund this year, which was
presented by Colleen Smith, Mr. Menzies' granddaughter, were, from left:
Courtney Sallows, who is attending the Stratford Chef School; Jennifer
Cowan, studying public affairs and policy management at Carleton University
in Ottawa; Andrew Smith, law and security at Conestoga College; Richelle
Jorritsma, business at Conestoga; Kendall Jutzi, studying to be a dental
assistant at Georgian College, Orillia. Inset is Tricia Teeft, psychology,
University of Toronto. Absent: Andrew Garland, University of Waterloo; Nolan

academic standing who is
pursuing an education in art,
English or music.
Jennifer Cowan received
the Crime Stoppers Award
which goes to the graduating
student who has demonstrated
good school citizenship. She
was also awarded the
McTavish Award for merit,
which is presented to
deserving students continuing
their education.
Megan Bragg earned the
Teachers-Festival Liaison
Council Scholarship for the
student who made an
exemplary contribution to the
drama projected at her school.
James deBoer received the
Wingham Optimists Award
which is presented to a
deserving graduate who is
pursuing post-secondary
education and is working to
make the world a better place.
Victoria Black was the
recipient of the Garniss
Family Award for the
Belgrave and area resident
who has exhibited good
school citizenship and has
contributed positively to the
community through
involvement in community
activities. She was also given
the Huron County Award for
the student pursuing and
education in the agricultural
field.
Jennifer VanNiekerk was
awarded the Doris Mackenzie
Scholarship for the studeirt
who specialized in business
and is continuing their
education and lives in the
former Lucknow High School
area.
The Mustangs on the Move
Award went to Matt Bromley
and Tim Jerva for
contributing positively to life
at Madill.
F.E. Madill Secondary
School Teaching Staff Awards
for the deserving graduates
who have demonstrated high
scholastic standing and/or
good citizenship were
awarded to Michelle deWit,
Jodi Semple, Albert Siertsema
and Peter Vander Sterre.
The Aiming for the the Top
Tuition Scholarships, for
outstanding academic
achievement for student
proceeding to an Ontario
college or university, were
awarded to Barnes, deBoer,
Garland, Jerva, Siertsema and
Teeft.
Barnes, Vicky Black,
deBoer, Garland, Jerva,
Semple, Teeft and
VanNiekerk received the
senior letter for earning three
intermediate awards for
scholastics, athletics and
activities or earned two
awards, one with double
points.
Ontario scholars were
Barnes, Vicky Black, Cowan.
deBoer. Garland. Jerva,
Siertsema, Teeft, Vander
Sterre and VanNiekerk.
Recipient
Samantha Thomas was
the recipient of this
year's Jeanne Oldfield
award at the F.E. Madill
commencement
ceremony Friday night.
Thomas is studying
interior design at
Georgian College,

Several local students took
home awards from graduation
ceremonies held at F.E.
Madill Secondary School in
Wingham Saturday evening.
The George Menzies
Endowment Fund Award
recipients were Jennifer
Cowan. Andrew Garland,
Richelle Jorritsma, Kendall
Jutzi, Nolan Krotz, Courtney
Sallows. Andrew Smith and
Tricia Teeft.
OAC proficiency awards
were given to Tricia Teeft for
family studies; Amy Barnes,
art and English and Heather
Black, history.
Black also received the
Grade 12 art proficiency
award .
Barnes and Garland were
amongst those receiving
OSSTF District 45 bursaries
as children of OSSTF
members continuing their
education.
Garland earned the ABCD
Award (Above and Beyond
the Call of Duty) for his
significant contribution to the
school.
Crystal McLellan earned
the Stephanie Lee Henry
Memorial Award which goes
to the Grade 12 student and
graduate of Brussels Public
School, who has contributed
positively to the academic,
social and extracurricular life
at the school.
The Jeanne
Oldfield
Memorial Arts Scholarship
went to Samantha Thomas. It
