Its oositivelscary... or is it? Last

Four decades ago when I went
around 'trick-or-treating" as a child,
costumes were handmade, and even
homemade treats such as candy
• apples were popular.
The predominant worldview • was
"modern": the possibility of any
spiritual reality behind the symbolism
was down-played. Witches. ghosts,
and goblins were pooh-poohed.
Much has changed since then. In
the 2l st century.. a new set of
meanings in the cultural environment
is ready to attach itself to activities
that in parents' memories seemed
entirely innocent.
Today's children are growing up in
a -"postmodern" environment where
science and reason• have less weight
than before. New Age and eastern
religions, yoga, Wicca. satanism. and
a pervasive preoccupation with the
occult all converge to impress upon
me young consciousness that there
really is a diverse spiritual world out
there.
Practices warned against in. Biblical

Youth who are bored or disenchanted

be intrigued by the promise of
spiritual power the Dark Side' offers.
The Harry Potter series deals with
such themes and has been
phenomenally popular. By treating a

those practising sorcery, witchcraft,
or spiritism are "detestable to the
Lord" (Deut.18:100. Consistent with
this, the closing book of the Bible
warns that those who practise magic
arts will filially be consigned to the
lake of tire (Rev.21:8).
It is a sad state of affairs when a
culture begins to give priority to
influences that are deceptive and
ultimately destructive. Concerning
spiritism (seeking contact with evil
spirits), Brooks Alexander writes:
"The extent to which a society
endorses or indulges in widespread
spiritism, therefore, is something of a
spiritual thermometer.-It can give us a
rough estimate of our collective state
of spiritual health... As a social
symptom, spiritism represents the
final stage of 'a long process of
spiritual decay. It is the terminal
phase of our flight from God."
Those who dabble with the
diabolical risk dining with the
Destroyer. Rather than witches,
ghosts, and the dark side of the
spiritual universe, let's focus with our
children instead on "whatever is true,
whatever is noble, whatever is right,
whatever is pure, whatever is -lovely,
whatever is admirable i-- if anything
is excellent or praiseworthy — think
aboutsuc.1 things. (Php.4:8)
