Invest wisely when buying previously-owned vehicles
The average transaction price of a
new passenger car today is close to
$23.000. and the average for a truck
is more than $31.000. That means
it takes the average consumer
28.6 weeks of earnings (compared to
20.0 in 1982) to be able to afford to
buy a new vehicle. To make
purchasing a vehicle more affordable
you may be considering buying a
previously owned, or second hand,
vehicle. It's a smart choice that many
Canadians are making. Total used
vehicle sales increased from 2.4
million units in 1992 to 3 million

His 1935 Auburn Sedan 851. built
in Auburn. Indiana. is. to the best of
his knowledge„ the only one in
Canada.
Though much of it is original,
there are parts which had to be
replaced or repaired.
There are two folding arms which
lift and lock the rear trunk lid. Hall
put an ad in the club newsletter and
was soon buying parts from a
collector in Zimbabwe. He met the
man the following year at the
Indiana gathering.
Hall also discovered that the rear
passenger side of the Auburn had
been severely damaged in an
accident so he bought a parts car in
New York and simply cut off the rear
quarter.
These cars were built in sections,
says Hall. because-at the time, there
were no machines large enough to
produce the width of metal needed.
The Auburn cost over $68,000 to
restore including a $300 (U.S.) strip
of chrome for the side and $1,070
(U.S.) for two headlights.
Hall is a member of the Horseless
Carriage Club which is
headquartered in California as well
as the Auburn, Cord, Dusenberg
Club of which he became the first
Canadian named to the board of
directors.
The 2002 gathering of Auburns,
Cords, Dusenbergs in Indiana drew
491 cars to mark the 50th
anniversary of the club.
Hall attends approximately 30 car
shows each season.
Of his ongoing love for the
units in 1998.
If you are considering buying a
used car, even a fairly new one, be
sure to factor in a reserve repair fund
into your total budget. When buying
a used car, the first money you spend
should be on the services of a trained
automotive technician to look over
your perspective purchase. Your
trusted automotive service
technician can help you spot
discrepancies that the untrained eye
might never catch.
This ounce of prevention will not
only help you to avoid making a bad
restoration of classic cars, Hall says,
"We are preserving history."
He is also quick to point out that
"classic" does not mean any vehicle
that is more than 20 years old.
The Classic Car Club of America
has an official list which includes
cars built between 1925 and 1948, in
most cases, he says.
"It depends on the style and model
to make it a classic. Classics have
engineering features, are well
appointed and expensive."
Hall also owns a 1964 Chrysler
Imperial convertible_ There were
only 922 built and five remain in this
country.
He has just begun work on a 1950
Mercury half-ton pickup. This one is
purchase, it will also help you to
determine what, if anything, you
can expect to spend on repairs soon
after you become the new owner. A
drive belt, radiator hose, battery;
brakes, or a couple of tires are all
typical items which might soon need
repair. Armed with the knowledge of
these impending repairs, you may be
able to have some extra bargaining
power with the vehicle's current
owner.
And be wary of the vehicle seller,
either a private owner or part of a
dealership who resists a
for pure nostalgic reasons. His father
owned such a truck and he and his
brother drove it as teenagers.
Hall now wants to take time to
enjoy his cars. "It is a family hobby.
Everyone piles in. Cruise nights are
a big thing these days."
Participating in tours organized by
various clubs can also be for the
entire family. Though they may be
driving the Cord, they make stops at
area attractions such as a doll
museum, refurbished train station or
other places of interest.
Though many vehicles have come
to life thanks to Hall and the many
craftspeople who help in the
restorations. Hall is happy with the
five he owns - for now.
professional inspection. It may mean
they have something to hide.
A professional opinion can be
valuable in estimating interior
repairs, too. A car with worn or
damaged fabric that is still in good
operating condition may still be a
good investment. Upholstery burns
and tears can usually be repaired by
an upholstery shop at a reasonable
price. Don't forget to have your
technician take a good look at the
vehicle's outer body as well.
Once you have made your
decision and purchased a previously
owned vehicle, remember to do
some basic preventative
maintenance at regular intervals.
Clean oil, a fresh oil filter, and a
properly tuned engine cost very
little, but add thousands of
kilometers to the life of your vehicle.
Enjoying classics a family hobby
