It is a love that has been nurtured
and enjoyed for several decades and
for Murray Hall of Turnberry, the
pleasure of talking about that love is
boundless.
Asking Hall about the 53 antique
vehicles which he has owned and
restored since his teenage years and
his eyes light up.
Though he has poSsessed a wide
variety of classic cars, including a
1914 Model T and 11 Packards, in
recent years his attention has turned
to Auburns. and Cords. He currently
owns one of each.
Hall takes great pleasure in
showing a photo of the rusted frame
that would eventually become his
prized 1929 red and maroon prize-
winning Cord.
He grins as he asks what one
thinks the asking price was for what
many would see as a hunk of scrap
iron.
Hall laughs when most people
(particularly women) suggest a few
hundred.
"1 offered him $10,000 and he
walked away," said Hall.
He eventually acquired the Cord,
along with three truckloads full of
parts for $19.000.
It was the spare parts that made it
a good deal for Hall. "I sold what I
didn't need and got around $20,000
for those." Many went to a collector
in Finland.
Hall then spent the next eight
years rebuilding, refurbishing and
tracking down authentic or
reproduction parts for his Cord.
"I though I could get it on the road
for $50,000 but I spent $46,950
more. I had to sell six other cars to
finish this one."
For those not involved in the
industry, those prices might seem
astronomical, but as Hall points out
the cost of various components, it is
easy to see the dollars adding up.
The reproduction nickel-plated
glove compartment door with
original crest totalled $800

Collector enthralled by classic car restoration
there were only 5,014 Cords
produced with only 186 surviving,
eight of which are in Canada.
Hall has taken the Cord to Indiana
twice to compete, bringing home
two seconds. He has also been a
judge for 14 years.
The 1915 Model T is a creation of
Hall's. It never was a car, but was
built with the parts of 26 other 1914
Model Ts.
It all began with a lantern which
hangs on the driver's side rear
bumper.
"I got that, then I had to get
everything that goes in front of it,"
says Hall.
Everything is very authentic, he
says as he shows the engine stamped
with the date Nov. 13. 1913.
Because the Model T evoked
every year during its production,
Hall says he had to acquire parts
specifically for a 1914 and that
meant looking everywhere.
"The back panels are from
Colorado," he said.
The Model Ts did not have a
starter until 1919 so Hall's car has a
crank. It has carbide headlamps
which had to be lit with a match and

American and a piece of red glass
for a taillight cost $125 (U.S.).
"Most of the reproduction parts
are from the States because they just
are not made in Canada," said Hall.
However, this works to his
advantage on the other end as well
because he then sells the cars in
American dollars.
When purchased new in Toronto
in 1929, that Cord would have cost
$4,510, said Hall. One has to realize
a Model A at the time sold for $600.
"This is the type of car that was
owned by Lady Eaton, Frank Lloyd
Wright, the Marks Brothers and
Sonja Henning."
The Cord is now worth more than
$100,000.
